Hi. My computer and laptop are now both over 5 years old, so it's time for them to be replaced. Since I hardly ever use the laptop away from the desk, and I use my iPad for stuff like that anyway, I'm looking to build a new PC to replace my current one. I'm looking for suggestions on any and every part of the PC.

 

Here's mostly what I'll be doing with the new computer:

  Email

  Word and Excel

  Some virtualization

  May, in the future, do some gaming, but low on the list

  Netflix

 

Some things I know I want/need:

  Hybrid drive for the OS/data

  Case big enough for the hybrid drive and three other drives that I'd like to make into a RAID 5 to hold backup data from all computers in the house

 

So, any recommendations on a decent, reasonably priced build would be appreciated. I've just started my research and looking for a place to start so I can figure what I actually need and a possible price. Feel free to give the best/most expensive builds with some recommendations where I can use a less expensive part. Really, anything you can tell me will be helpful!

Couple of sites for you to look at Logical Increments which will show you what sort of spec you can get for your budget and PCPartPicker where you can put your own list of parts together, once you are done, save your list of parts, post the link here and we will take a look for you.

Ok. Finally had time to at least take a swing at picking some parts. My only issue is that I it says I need an additional SATA 6 Gb/s compatible port.

With the exception of the MB not a bad list, can I ask why you went with a mini ITX board in a full ATX tower, plenty of room in the case but a cramped MB defeats the object, a better board here

As far as I know, nearly all boards with WiFi are ITx and only have 4 6GB ports.

You could add a PCi card with 2xSATA ports.

A better solution is an ATX board with 6 SATA ports and add a WiFi card, you usually get better than the integrated.

 

I would go for the Gamer/Aura, which is a more featured board.

You would still need to buy one SATA cable as only 4 are included in the MB box.  i.e. > https://www.scan.co....stack-compatiab

The CPU cooler will fit as clearance to the side fan is 170mm.

Ok. Made the change for the motherboard. Besides having to get a SATA cable (which I'm assuming a cable is a cable is a cable), looks like I'll need a WIFI card. Any suggestions for that or anything else you can think of? I'm somewhat computer knowledgeable but never actually sat down to make my own computer. Just to help others fix theirs. A few things.

yes, https://www.pugetsys...-Revisited-183/  You can't tell what colour/shape  cables come with the MB, so linked to a black/round one with different end clips.

You have not include an OS.   If you have a Windows Retail version, it can be used on a new build, if an OEM version, you can't use as it is tied to the original MB and not transferable.

No Optical drive.   Though not essential now a days, still easer to use as against configuring/burning USB media.

 

As ESD and contamination are very important factors when building, I found that using disposable surgical examination gloves, when handling sensitive parts, is the simplest solution.

Advise including a internal mini system beeper which gives the first indication of problems during POST, and for troubleshooting. > http://www.cwc-group.com/casp.html

I've got an ESD strap, so I should be set there. I just assumed a beeper came built it, but yeah, I'll definitely need that for the POST. Thanks for the tips! I'm hoping to build a computer once I get a new job and this thread will be very helpful!

Been a long time since I've seen a Desktop board with a speaker.  Some cases do include one.  Can't understand why board don't include one as they probable only cost about 20C wholesale

Hi all. Starting to get close to being able to build it (Graduated and have a part time job but need a full-time job) and was wondering if this build still looked good. Also, I was wondering if there is a video card that is close to the  MSI GeForce GTX 1070 8GB Video Card but cost a little bit less ($414). Should I add a sound card? Any suggestions on a RAID controller? I'm thinking about doing a three disk RAID 5.
