I can get the system to post without the GPU in using the onboard graphics but nothing with the card in.

Tried the other PCI-E slots, made sure the card was firmly in place and tried changing the setting in Bios-Display to PCI-E but if after saving the setting...if i go back into Bios it has reverted back to original Auto setting.

Any help appreciated.

Asus Z87 Board + Asus GTX660 card

(Been doing this while the system is set up outside the case)

Gday jacktro.

Have you made sure the 6 pin PCI-e plug is securely seated to the GPU?

Have you tried an alternative Port from the GPU, i.e. VGA?

Please give the brand/model of the PSU.

Hey m8, the 6 pin PCI-e was secure....

Just tried the DVI and the HDMI into the GPU and it posted on both.

Just does not seem to want to connect through any ports on the IO panel(VGA or HDMI)

PSU is a Super Flower "Leadex" 750W 80 Gold

So your PSU is good.

Problem could be, a cable, a port on the monitor or GPU.

Please give the brand/model of the monitor.

The model number of the Asus MB.

Are you using any cable adaptors?
