When I turn on my computer a screen will pop up saying;

 

verifying DMI pool data..............................

 

along with other stuff.

 

Then the last line saysdisk boot failure, insert system disk and press enter.

 

 

 

What do I do?

Either your hard drive has a problem or the system on it has been corrupted. If you go into the setup menu, you should see the drive. Often the manufacturer has a test program that you can download and run  (bootable CD/DVD).

I went into the setup ... I think it was called BIOS setup while booting  ... used the F2 key

 

Now what am I looking for?

Gday.

DMI short for Desktop Management Interface, a framework that enables software to collect information about your computer environments.

You can try a few simple things first, before delving in further.

Make sure there is no disc in the DVD player or a Bootable USB attached.  (computer may be trying to Boot from them).

Restart the computer and enter the Setup, > tab along to the exit menu, > select Default or Safe setting and press enter, > confirm choice if requested. 

Do you now Boot to the Desktop?

If an error, please list it. 

What OS are you using? 

Do you have the OS installation disc or USB media?

Yes, the BIOS setup. Each menu is different, so it is hard to say where it is, but in there should be a listing for the hard drives, including any DVD or CD drive. It should list what hard drive is attached to the computer.

I have restarted multiple times.

During the boot process I am given 2 options ; Boot Menu F10 and Bios Setting F2

 

Ive done both.

F10 gets me to where a select a boot drive.  I select the Hard Drive which has this beside it;;; ch2M : WDC WD500AAJB- 00WGA0

 

when I select it it starts the verifying DMI Pool Data........

then I get Disk read error occured

Press CTRL ALT DEL

 

 

If I select the F2 instead of F10 I get to the CMOS setup utility.

 

 

I have tried to do the F8 to try to boot in safe mode but F8 gets me nowhere .

 

 

Before coming here I got to where is asked if you wanted to boot in safe mode etc...  

I selected safe mode with networking but it would not do anything.

5.   Do you have access to another computer?   You may need one bto create repair media.

6.   Is your computer a pre build, like a Dell/HP? (give the model, i.e. Latatude t12B.   If a custom build, give the specs, including the PSU.

Boot your computer into BIOS setup utility by pressing F2 key,  BIOS settings can be resetted to its factory settings by F9 key and changes can be save with F10 key.

If F9 wont reset BIOS to its factory settings then look for function key that will reset BIOS setting this function key can be listed at Exit tab.

Make sure BIOS detects your hard disk drive.

The Master Boot Record (MBR) could be damage boot your computer into Recovery Console with Windows XP CD and execute below commands.

 

I don't see anywhere the F9 function, however I do see where it says"Load optimized defaults"  I did that.   No help there.

 

IDE Chanel 2 Master is where it shows the hard drive.

 

I don't have a XP CD.

Which XP do I download ?  the first one or the second one listed.

Before attempting to make any further repairs to your system, we must make sure you have becked up all your Data.

so you should create a live Puppy Linux USB, as suggested by Freebooter.

NB.   When you Boot from the DVD/USB, the program runs in the RAM on your computer and does not install anything to your HDD.

Update to my dilemma  

 

I was in the process of the instructions given but before I created the bootable USB I got a computer technician to look at the computer and he says the HD is dead.  says it will not even spin.

 

I will go ahead and try the suggestions above if you still want me to.

 

If the HD is actually dead is there a way to recover the data?

Ok.   I have puppy loaded to usb stick and booted the computer

 

I don't see the hard drive listed.  Maybe I'm looking in the wrong place.

 

Where would it be on the screen that comes up using Puppy ?

Only two things at bottom of the desktop in Puppy. The jump drive and the floppy drive..
