Hello beautiful people at geeks,

 

Just wondering why my laptop computer keeps going back the year 2006 every time i restart my computer because of which every time i go on google or any other web pages it says" this page not certified, do you want to continue etc".. or so , i am not sure why it does that, it also does not let me do any windows update or antivirus software updates

The most common cause of such behaviour is the CMOS battery expiring, the CMOS battery powers the BIOS chip so that it stores the time, date and boot order when the computer is powered down, if the battery dies or the electrical contact from the battery is lost the up to date information is lost and you are left with the information that was mapped onto the chip when the BIOS was first set up on the MB, in this instance it was back in 2006.

 

Another more serious cause is a bad BIOS chip.

Please post the brand and model name or number of the notebook so that we can research the CMOS battery information for it.

 

If you know how to access the BIOS on the notebook, do so, set the correct time and date, save the settings and exit, ** restart the computer and see if it will then update.

 

** Do this while we research the CMOS battery info and please make sure that once you reset the time and date etc that you do not completely shut down the computer and disconnect the power, if you do the info on the BIOS chip will revert back to 2006 again.

Thanks for the prompt reply sir ! my laptop is "acer" extensa 5620z, I am not sure how to look up the BIOS, but if i restart its going back to 2006. and you are right about the battery. it makes sense. Its atleast 5 years old, i bought it in 2010, so the adapter has to stay connected to the laptop, if i trip on it or remove the adapter, the computer shuts shutdown without warning. Does this all mean  that the computer is going to die soon ? and that I should get a new one ?

To access the BIOS press Del or F2 immediately after powering on.

 

Information on replacing the CMOS battery for your specific model of notebook is non existent I`m afraid and I can only provide you with some general information to give you an idea of what is involved in replacing the CMOS battery.

This means that both the CMOS battery and the main power battery are both dead, the main power battery you can do without replacing as long as you only ever use the computer connected to the mains power, the CMOS battery needs to be replaced or you will need to reset the time and date every time that you power up the notebook, the alternative is to reset the time and date then leave the computer permanently connected to the mains power and in stand by mode rather than being shut down altogether.

Hi Philpower,

 

Awesome instruction ! loved it, that makes total sense. I'm going to keep working on this current situation until it totally gives up. Do you recommend a good cheaper laptop in the market ? It will be helpful. I am not exactly into disassembly coz I'm too frightened about that. I'm not a mechanical minded guy. lol, I really loved your help but I think I will keep it connected and on standby mode until the day it gives up. May be this is why none of my antivirus software is updating so to speak. I accessed the bios , and updated the time, and it shows the current time etc... so its working for now. But lets say this issue is resolved for now can I revisit this thread anytime to view the disassembly video .. just one day when I feel brave to take it all apart and save some money instead of buying a new laptop ?

yeah i can update malwarebytes now but i still cant seem to update the AV software, it begins the update and then hangs, Let me go to the waiting room and check out what Metallica wants from me. standby

If what is suggested here resolves the issue you should update your thread on the malware forum to let the malware team know, if we cannot resolve the issue here then we can ask for a Mod or Admin to re open your Waiting Room thread.

 

Try uninstalling and then reinstalling your AV software, if no luck do the following for us;

 

Download MiniToolBox and save the file to the Desktop.
Close the browser and run the tool, check the following options:

• List last 10 Event Viewer log
• List Installed Programs

Click on Go.

Post the resulting log in your next reply.

Hi philpower,

The malware software updates and runs fine. Its the anitvirus software, namely "microsoft security essentials" thats the problem. I tried uninstalling and reinstalling but now it wont reinstall. here is the log as you requested,

Fully aware that MBAM will update but MSE will not 

 

All of the reported errors precede you resetting the time and date in the BIOS therefore those issues are now resolved.

 

Uninstall MSE then download/install Avast! free from the Authors site option here once installed allow it to fully scan your computer, if you are unable to do this you will need to re open your thread in the Waiting Room by contacting a Mod.
