upgrading graphics card

hi im upgrading my pc,i have a nvidia geforce mx440 but i want to upgrade it,so i read various online things on how to install new cards,i went out and bought a 9600 pro,installed as it said and it didnt work,i tried again with a 9600xt which i have still got,i installed and everything seems to be working the pc is running the card fan is going but the monitor dosnt display anything and the mouse and keyboard dont come to life as they normally do.so here are my system specs
amd athlon 2000+ xp
gigabyte ga-7vkml mobo
500w psu
1gb pc2100 ram
80gb hdd

the card i have is a sapphire radeon 9600xt 128mb agp card,my mobo only supports agp 4x but the card says it should work with the mobo. any help greatly appreciatted
