Hi phillpower2 Well a couple of days since my last report and I have been using the PC a fair bit and I am pleased to report I haven't had a single issue of hanging.  I really appreciate... Go to the full post »

Hi there,

I've arrived here after (too) many hours of Googling my problem to no avail.

I have a Dell PC running Windows 7 Professional Edition, 64 bit.

I am a music fan and keep a library of 30k +/- tracks on an external drive which until recently was a HDD WD500H1U-00.  This started to get a little temperamental so I treated myself to a brand new shiny Samsung MU-PT1T0B SSD to take over the task of storing my library (as well as photos etc).

The SSD arrived, I connected it to a USB 3.0 port on the back of PC using the provided USB to Micro USB cable.

Windows picked up the new hardware, installed drivers and let me know it was ready to use.  I copied my music folder from the old external WD HDD and pasted it into the new drive.  I then smiled smugly to myself as GBs of data whizzed across to the new drive at never-before-seen speeds! I did the same for other folders I wanted on the new drive too (mostly photo albums).

In the time since I've been happily using the drive and have noticed WMP loads much more quickly than it did previously when the library was on the HDD - more smiles.

However, since I have added the SSD, I have had repeated problems with (different) software hanging.  Once the software has 'hung' any attempts to close it through Task Manager fails and the only solution I've found is to press and hold the power button and force a shut down and then reboot.  Not ideal...

As it is happening so frequently I have been paying more attention to when it is happening and have observed the following;

It does not seem to be software specific; I have had Word, Excel, WMP and even Windows Explorer hang on me.

It occurs when I am 'editing' a file that is on the SSD; by this I mean I can view/play/move files on the SSD and copy to/delete from the SSD but as soon as I try to edit a file the software hangs.

This can be making changes to a document in Office and then clicking 'Save', editing a track/album name or adding Album Art in WMP, even rotating a picture clockwise in Windows Explorer.

The hanging of the software does not impede the function of the rest of the PC - I can continue to browse or use other software but once some software has hung, I cannot access the SSD from any other software (in fact trying to do so then causes that piece of software to hang too!).

Once I've terminated and rebooted, I find I have to go to the SSD in My Computer, right click for properties and then Tools and 'Check Now'. This dismounts the drive and then checks for errors which finds and fixes the errors and it is always the file that I was 'editing' at the time that is shown as fixed.

All and any help / suggestions gratefully received.  I can gladly provide further info if needed.

Many thanks.

:welcome:    thefunkateer,

Could be power related being that the SSD is only powered by the USB port;

Go into Device Manager then Universal Serial Bus controllers,
Double-click the “USB Root Hub” device, and click the Power Management tab, if there is more than one do the same for each.
Turn off the Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power option click the OK button and your done.

Hi phillpower2

Thanks for your speedy response, with the volume of queries on the site I thought it might take a week or so for a reply!

I followed your instructions and under USB Controllers found 2 x USB Root Hub, 2 x Generic USB Hub and 1 x Intel® USB 3.0 Root Hub.  I checked them all and the only one with the Allow the computer to turn off this device  box selected was the 3.0 Hub.  So I have deselected it and will see how it goes.

I'll be sure to report back either way.

Thanks again for your suggestion.

All the best!

Hi phillpower2

Am sorry to report that adjusting the power management settings has not resolved my problem.  I thought at first that it had but it turned out I was just busy with stuff that didn't involve the SSD.  As soon as I tried interacting with it (other than copying files to it) I got freezes and hanging again.

Some further info - I have been reading the Windows error logs in more detail when I get problems.  A common error that is listed (though not always) is AppHangB1 with the problem-causing file identified as *softwarei'mtryingtouse*.exe.

I've also had a first in that I tried to open a Word file located on the SSD, first through explorer and secondly through Word open file command and in both instances it hung Word and the SSD and resulted in me forcing a shutdown and rebooting.

Any further suggestions?

All the best

And a further note, I've been happily ripping new CDs straight to the SSD without problem (playback fine) but one CD ripped without the Album Artwork and when I tried to add this using "Paste Album Artwork" function in WMP it hung.  However, when I used mp3tag software it allowed me to browse to the files and add the image without issue.

This is an example of the Windows Error Message descriptions I see.  In this case it was when Windows explorer hung but I'll get the same message in different applications with the name of the application I am trying to use.

Four problems that we can see are with your AV protection (MSE) MS Office, Windows media player and the resultant hard shut down, it is highly unlikely (but not impossible) that the SSD is responsible.

When you post the requested Speccy url below can you also answer the following two questions;

Have you checked for any yellow ! in the Device Manager.

Do you use the Windows Media Player Network Sharing Service.

Three things for you to do and in the order shown;

1: When you restart the computer, check that the time and date are both correct in the BIOS and on the taskbar as soon as you boot into Windows.

2: Download then run Speccy (free) and post the resultant url for us, details here,  this will provide us with information about your computer hardware + any software that you have installed that may explain the present issue/s.

3: Download then run the Windows All in One Repair (free)  from here, disregard the malware guidance but follow the other steps to the letter and in particular ensuring that you first create a new restore point and perform a proper Windows clean boot before running the repair, details for the clean boot here.

.

Polite reminder;

Tip

If you have something to add while waiting for a reply use the edit tab – bottom right of the dialogue input box and this will ensure that no information that you provide is overlooked (this can happen if your topic has more than one page)  thank you for understanding.

Hi phillpower2

Here's the speccy URL http://speccy.piriform.com/results/khVeMcnBeMJILt8z0605PkP

I've checked device manager, expanding all of the drop downs and can see no yellow ! triangles.  Do they show in this overview list or do I have to double click each device to see them?

Looking at the services list I can see that WMP Network Sharing is running (by default when the PC is on).  However I don't access my WMP library from any other devices.  Should I disable this service?

The BIOS and the taskbar both show the correct time immediately on boot up.

I will now proceed with the third of your recommended tasks and report back.

Many thanks.

Hello thefunkateer,

Speccy url not working I`m afraid, can you try again for us.

The yellow ! or red X when shown in Device Manager (overview) are a tell tale sign that something is amiss but quite often devices and/or drivers can be reported as working properly when in fact they are not.

Please disable WMP Network Sharing and that should resolve that error.

Time and data info acknowledged, if they were off it could have explained the update failures.

Will wait on your update for now, no rush here as I`m off to work shortly.

Trying the Speccy URL again.   http://speccy.pirifo...Pkg8qizsUpSceJQ

**Edit**

Further to re-posting the Speccy URL above I have been trying step 3 of the process.  I've successfully downloaded the repair tool.  However when I follow the steps for the clean boot I encounter the hanging problem. I have been clicking as follows;

msconfig

Services Tab

Check 'Hide MS Services' checkbox

Disable All

Apply

**Hanging Occurs with Blue Wheel whirring**

This has happened several times now and each time, after waiting a while (30 mins was longest wait) I have clicked

Cancel (nothing happens)

The Red X on the top right corner of the box - nothing happens immediately but a while after this an "End Process" box appears and I click "End Process".

The "End Process" and "Msconfig" boxes close.

All seemed well but then when I tried to carry on using the PC things weren't right - programs wouldn't load.

So I went to Start - Shut Down

The Blue Windows 7 shutting down screen appears with the blue wheel whirring and "Shutting Down..." displaying but then nothing happens.  It does not shut down.

I then push and hold the power button to force a shutdown.

Then when I reboot it offers me Safe Mode as it has not shut down correctly - I pick Boot Normally and repeat the whole process...

On one occasion after closing the msconfig box I ran Task Manager to ensure all was ended and noticed that the "Services" tab here would not populate, it just hung with "Loading..." showing.
