Hi

I have a gaming desktop i brought off a friend a couple of years ago, It is an msi 7693 running windows 7 ultimate.

worked fine for ages then, after i transferred some documents from old laptop onto it i started getting these jittery cpu spikes, during which the internet sometimes cuts out for up to 5 mins, but still works on my phone (most of the time) 

It's got to the stage where i cannot play much on it, and can rarely get through a game of league of legends without having to restart the application after disconnecting. 

I have factory reset the thing about 6 times now over the last couple of years and it never stops the problem permanently. 

my most recent attempt of finding out the problem ( i have a big attempt every now and then when i get sick of it.) involved downloading malwarebytes, though every time i run a scan it gets cancelled after about 2-3 seconds of run time, without any explanation. i am unsure what to do at this point, have run every software i can find to get viruses and malware, none of which have worked, and i feel as though the virus/ malware may be cancelling the scans in malwarebytes, which is incredibly frustrating. 

i am aware that the pc is fairly old and the issues may be hardware related but it still has some semi powerful hardware so figure this was worth a try first.

any help would be greatly appreciated

Download, Save and Install it.  Tell it you do not need CCLEANER.    Run Speccy.  When it finishes (the little icon in the bottom left will stop moving), 

File, Save as Text File,  (to your desktop) note the name it gives. OK.  Open the file in notepad and delete the line that gives the serial number of your Operating System.  

(It will be near the top about 10 lines down.) Save the file.  Attach the file to your next post.  (More Reply Options, Choose File, Open, Attach This File)

Click twice on the CPU column header  to sort things by CPU usage with the big hitters at the top.  

 

Wait a full minute then:

 

File, Save As, Save.  Note the file name.   Open the file  on your desktop and copy and paste the text to a reply.

 

 

Copy the next 2 lines:

 

TASKLIST /SVC  > \junk.txt

notepad \junk.txt

 

Open an Elevated Command Prompt:

Start, All Programs, Accessories then right click on Command Prompt and Run as Administrator

It's running a bit hot for a desktop.  Wouldn't hurt to shut it down but leave it plugged in and open it up.  Clean the dust from the heatsink.  It's OK to remove the fan but do not disturb the heatsink as that will require new thermal paste.  If you remove the fan make sure you put it back blowing the same direction.  I use a vacuum cleaner hose and a small brush to clean the heatsink.  Also clean all vents and fans including the power supply fan.

 (Don't get the latest version as filehippo has a bad copy.  Instead get version 4.51.  Avoid the speedfan website's version as it is full of adware.)

 

Download, save and Install it (Win 7+ or Vista right click and Run As Admin.) then run it (Win 7+ or Vista right click and Run As Admin.).

 

It will tell you your temps in real time tho the default is to show the hard drive temp in the systray.  You can change it:  Hit Configure then click on the highest temp and check Show in tray

 

The other problem I see and it is critical is your Seagate hard drive.   Seagate drives just don't hold up and yours is no exception.  It has already had 328 sectors fail.  Don't know how many spares it has left but can't be many.  Also showing a lot of errors.  Time to clone it before it fails completely..  Get a Western Digital Black as a replacement.  They are faster and last longer than any of the rest.

You can use the cloning program from your new hard drive or even from Seagate or you can use one of the free ones:

Some of them require you to boot from a CD or USB drive (it's faster that way but others like aomei can clone from within windows.

 

 

Process Explorer doesn't show any problems so I expect the hard drive failing is the problem.
