Hey all. Recently, I'm not sure how, I picked up a spyware infestation that involves the file DrPMon.dll as well as putting a Trojan into my system, neither of which I can get rid of. I've been running AdAware and Spybot, which clean out the secondary infestations, but can't seem to touch the root of the problem. I'm pasting my HijackThis log below. Hope you can help. :tazz:

Heya and welcome to Geeks to Go, my name is Guse and I’ll be helping you today.

Please print these instructions out or copy and paste them to notepad as the internet may not be accessible through all of these fixes.

While TeaTimer is an excellent tool for the prevention of spyware, it can sometimes prevent HijackThis from fixing certain things.
Please disable TeaTimer for now until you are clean. TeaTimer can be re-activated once your HijackThis log is clean.
  • Open Spybot Search & Destroy.
  • In the Mode menu click "Advanced mode" if not already selected.
  • Choose "Yes" at the Warning prompt.
  • Expand the "Tools" menu.
  • Click "Resident".
  • Uncheck the "Resident "TeaTimer" (Protection of overall system settings) active." box.
  • In the File menu click "Exit" to exit Spybot Search & Destroy.
You have an about:blank infection, among others. I’ve dealt with about:blank personally before (on MY machine) and it can be a real beast to get rid of. As a result, this may be a several step process, but hang with me and we’ll get through it.

I’ve noticed that you have a program called “SigX” on your machine. It’s a neat concept, but the its own description…

SigX is a dynamic signature image generated based on whatever data your computer sends it though our SigX program. It can display your current Mp3, current OS, Free Ram, your current time and more. And has statistics like a counter to show how many people saw your signature.

It has two parts. A Client which sends the data from your computer to our server, and the image generation which is performed on this server. All you need to do is run the Client on your computer and put the BBcode (or HTML) onto your signature or Blog and you'll be all set. Its as simple as that!

…should probably give you pause. I’d strongly suggest uninstalling that program. I don’t know about you, but I’m just not hot on things sending my usage information to a remote server.

First, I’ll need you to download some programs for me:
About:Buster by RubbeRDuckY
CWShredder
The Killbox
Cleanup! (Install, but don’t run)

Update About:Buster by RubbeRDuckY
  • Unzip the contents of AboutBuster.zip and an AboutBuster directory will be created.
  • Navigate to the AboutBuster directory and double-click on AboutBuster.exe.
  • Click "OK" at the prompt with instructions.
  • Click "Update" and then "Check For Update" to begin the update process.
  • If any updates exist please download them by clicking "Download Update" then click the X to close that window.
  • Now close About:Buster
Update CWShredder
  • Open CWShredder and click I AGREE
  • Click Check For Update
  • Close CWShredder
The next portion of our fixes will take place in HijackThis. Make sure all other programs and windows are closed.

Now, run HijackThis! and click Scan. Please place a check next to the items in bold (different colored items will be explained later):

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = about:blank
R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = about:blank
R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,SearchAssistant = about:blank
R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,CustomizeSearch = about:blank
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\SearchURL,(Default) = about:blank
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {01F44A8A-8C97-4325-A378-76E68DC4AB2E} - (no file)
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [SigXC] C:\Program Files\SigXC\SigX.exe

Make sure that you’ve visually double-checked that you’ve only selected the items listed above and then click Fix Checked ->.

Boot into Safe Mode:
Restart your computer and as soon as it starts booting up again continuously tap F8. A menu should come up where you will be given the option to enter Safe Mode.

Please run About:Buster by RubbeRDuckY:
  • Click Start and then OK to allow AboutBuster to scan for Alternate Data Streams.
  • Click Yes to allow it to shutdown explorer.exe.
  • It will begin to check your computer for malicious files. If it asks if you would like to do a second pass, allow it to do so.
  • When it has finished, click Save Log. Make sure you save it as I may need a copy of it later.
  • Reboot your computer into safe mode again
Run about:buster again following the same instructions as above, this time without the restart at the end

Now run CWShredder. Click I Agree, then Fix and then Next, let it fix everything it asks about.

Now, let’s remove some of the offending programs… go to Start | Settings | Control Panel | Add/Remove Programs.

Find the following programs and remove them (if they exist):

SigX

Now, find the following folder using Windows Explorer and delete it:

Now run CleanUp!Reboot your computer into normal windows.

Please run an on-line virus scan at TrendMicro or BitDefender. (Please post the results of the scan(s) in your next reply along with new HijackThis log).

Kinda odd... About:Buster didn't find anything. Neither did CWShredder. I also uninstalled SigX. I picked up the program a while ago and forgot to get rid of it.

Yeah, that is a bit odd. I see some things in your scan log that I don't like, though (virus-wise), so I want you to try this... you may want to print out these instructions and use them as a reference.

First:
Please download ewido security suite it is a trial version of the program.
  • Install ewido security suite
  • When installing, under "Additional Options" uncheck "Install background guard" and "Install scan via context menu".
  • Launch ewido, there should be an icon on your desktop double-click it.
  • The program will prompt you to update click the OK button
  • The program will now go to the main screen
You will need to update ewido to the latest definition files.
  • On the left hand side of the main screen click update
  • Click on Start
The update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.
Once the updates are installed do the following:
  • Click on scanner
  • Make sure the following boxes are checked before scanning:
    • Binder

Ewido cleaned some stuff out, which is good. I still don’t like everything I see, though.

First, let’s start this out by resetting your restore points.

To reset your restore points, please note that you will need to log into your computer with an account which has full administrator access. You will know if the account has administrator access because you will be able to see the System Restore tab. If the tab is missing, you are logged in under a limited account.

(Windows XP)
1. Turn off System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

2. Reboot.

3. Turn ON System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
UN-Check *Turn off System Restore*.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

How to Turn On and Turn Off System Restore in Windows XP
http://support.micro...kb;en-us;310405

Please download Nailfix from here. Unzip it to the desktop but please do NOT run it yet.

Next, please reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following:
1) Restart your computer
2) After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8.
3) Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear
4) Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode.

For additional help in booting into Safe Mode, see the following site.

Once in Safe Mode, please double-click on Nailfix.cmd. Your desktop and icons will disappear and reappear, and a window should open and close very quickly --- this is normal.

Next please run HijackThis, click Scan, and check:

O2 - BHO: Band Class - {01F44A8A-8C97-4325-A378-76E68DC4AB2E} - C:\WINDOWS\systb.dll (file missing)
O3 - Toolbar: (no name) - {2CDE1A7D-A478-4291-BF31-E1B4C16F92EB} - (no file)
O23 - Service: System Startup Service (SvcProc) - Unknown owner - C:\WINDOWS\svcproc.exe (file missing)

Close all open windows except for HijackThis and click Fix Checked.

Delete the files, if found on your PC -

C:\Windows\winobject.dll
C:\Windows\winserv.exe
C:\Windows\wupdt.exe
C:\Windows\systb.dll
C:\Windows\kw.dat
C:\Windows\toServer.pst
C:\Windows\lu.dat
C:\Windows\extract.exe
C:\Windows\button0.ico
C:\Windows\button1.ico
C:\Windows\button2.ico
C:\Windows\logo.ico
C:\Windows\system32\jysvxa.exe

Restart your computer in normal mode.

Rerun Ewido and post it’s results, along with another HijackThis scan and post those results.

Ewido cleaned something, but nothing of any importance. Also, I don't see anything malicious in your HijackThis log this time through.... :tazz: Congrats, your log is CLEAN!

How's the computer running? Any of the old problems still there?

Let me know.

In the future, here are some suggestions to keep your computer more secure.

Use a firewall - If you’re on a broadband connection, this shouldn’t even be an option. You can get a good, FREE firewall from ZoneLabs called ZoneAlarm here.

Make sure that you keep Windows up to date
- Microsoft is constantly releasing updates to plug holes in their OS. It’s a good idea to take advantage of these as frequently as possible. As a matter of fact, if you’re lazy like me you can set Automatic Updates by right clicking on My Computer and selecting Properties . Then click the Automatic Updates tab, then click the Automatic radio button then click OK.

Make sure you have an up-to-date virus scanner – This is super important. Heck, it typically doesn’t even matter which one that you use… just pick one and keep it updated. A free virus scanner can be had from Grisoft, called AVG. Get it here.

You can also get a more secure browser
– Not a necessity at all, but most exploits are manufactured to attack Internet Explorer. For the time being, browsers such as Opera and Firefox aren’t nearly as exploitable… yet.

Practice safe browsing
– Just some run of the mill things to keep you safer. Don’t open email attachments even from people you know unless you know the attachment is coming. Try to stay to larger websites… it’s the smaller… less public ones that typically give you trouble (*this isn’t to say NEVER go there, just minimize it*). Also, try to stay legal: warez (stolen software) and file sharing apps (Kazaa, Torrents, Limewire) tend to have grotesque amounts of spyware associated.

Just some helpful tips. Enjoy malware-free computing!
