Google pixel phone interface with apple ipad

My son is getting my wife an ipad for Christmas. We have been windows people up till now. She also needs a phone update and I am attracted to the Google pixel. My son argues that I should get an iPhone to make communication with her new iPad easier. I see the Google pixel as a nice crossover into the apple world . Any thoughts on integrating the pixel with the ipad...keeping in mind they would both be new to this user?
