We live in a rural area,BT broadband was only 0.5mbps so we decided to get satellite broadband,get a great 22MBPS but the only problem is is that it is very expensive at £45 for 25gb per month,so unlimited on satellite is out of the question.Ok,so we decided to upgrade out TV,got a SMART TV,all the bells and whistles but we didn't realise how much data would be used up in streaming,even in just standard quality.I contacted Netflix to see if there was a way around this,they advised downloading to my android phone during the hours of midnight to 6am(that is when we get free downloads etc from satellite broadband company) and then buying and using a Chromecast to 'cast' the film from phone to TV,they didn't explain to me that this STILL used up all the data.So here is what else I have tried so far.I phoned Netflix back and they explained that the downloads were available to view offline so I tried to think of a way to play the film on the phone and connect it to the TV so I bought a micro USB-HDMI adapter,then bought high speed HDMI-HDMI cable-this didn't work.I also tried using the simple USB cable but that didn't work.Then I had a brainwave and thought I would get an unlimited data sim card but we can only get 2G in this area,is that fast enough for what I want??Can anybody advise anything else??? All I want is to watch some box sets or movies,thanks in advance!!Oh,I also asked Netflix if I could download to my laptop using Windows 8 and they said no,that wasn't possible as downloads are only available to mobile devices.I have a tablet but it also runs Windows 8.

sorry rkinner i really don't see how screen capturing a streaming feed solves the problem of using up all their data allowance, in fact i don't really see any problem that will solve.

 

the problem should have been fixed by downloading the content between midnight and 6am when they have free unlimited download data and then using whatever method best suits them to display the downloaded content from the phone to the tv.

 

the chromecast solution they have been told to use should work just fine and not use up any data allowance at all but seeing how they still used up all their data allowance when using this method then in my opinion they were doing something wrong, probably re-streaming the content from the net and not actually playing the content that should already be downloaded and on the phone when they downloaded it for free, they need to watch it offline and cast it to the tv to not use any data.

 

don't forget even browsing the netflix site can use up data allowance a lot quicker than browsing any other sites.

 

i believe netflix is in the process of bringing downloadable content to other devices so they may be able to download to their pc and try it that way without using the phone now or in the near future.

yes this should work but only to download content to watch later because 2g is not fast enough to live stream anything.

They said they could download at night without limit.  If they capture the download then they can watch it during the day.

sorry i'm being dense here but still fail to see why they need to screen capture something that's already on the phone and can be watched and cast to the tv during the day anyway.

 

besides that i'd think your solution probably breaks all kinds of copywrite laws.

Don't know if this will help or not, but have you looked at Kodi.com.  It is a system that offers Netflex and

just about every other digital offering made  - music - tv- videos, etc  etc

 

Just download it to your computer and then stream it to your TV from your computer.  You already have the cable for doing this.
