Norton AV scans on my son's machine are turning up complaints about C:\WINNT\SYSTEM32\rdriv.sys -- can't disinfect it.

I've followed the instructions on other posts (there are a LOT of them!), but the blasted thing won't go away. Here is the latest HiJackThis log:

When I try to use Killbox to nuke rdriv.sys on reboot, it pops up an error proclaiming:
PendingFileRenameOperations Registry Data has been Removed by External Process!

Also, the Windows firewall is still disabled, even after loading the registry repair patches that you've posted.

Please download the following programs, but do not run them yet:

* rdrivRem.zip
*Unzip it to your desktop.
* Ewido Security Suite
*Install ewido security suite
*Launch ewido, there should be a big E icon on your desktop, double-click it.
*The program will prompt you to update click the OK button
*The program will now go to the main screen
*You will need to update ewido to the latest definition files.
*On the left hand side of the main screen click update
*Click on Start
*The update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.
*After the updates are installed exit Ewido.
* CleanUp!
*Install it.
* Killbox by Option^Explicit
*Save it to your desktop.

Reboot your computer into Safe Mode. You can do this by restarting your computer and continually tapping the F8 key until a menu appears. Use your up arrow key to highlight "Safe Mode" then hit enter.

1.) Please double-click rdrivRem.bat to run the program - follow the instructions on the screen.

2.) Run Cleanup! by double-clicking the Cleanup! icon on your desktop.

3.) Double-click the Ewido Security Suite icon to run the program. Set the program up as follows:
*Click on scanner
*Make sure the following boxes are checked before scanning:
*Binder
*Crypter
*Archives
*Click on Start Scan
*Let the program scan the machine
While the scan is in progress you will be prompted to clean the first file. Choose "clean", then put a check next to "Perform action on all infections" in the left corner of the window (this way you don't have to sit and watch ewido) click OK
*Once the scan has completed, there will be a button located on the bottom of the screen named Save report
*Click Save report
*Save the report to your desktop.

After those are done, reboot into normal mode.

4.) Make sure your firewall is on.
Go to Start > Run type:

firewall.cpl

Click OK.

Make sure you can turn it off then turn it back on and that nothing is greyed out.
Also, Make sure your Anti-Virus program is working properly - you can turn on and off auto-protect, etc.

5.) Run this online virus scan:
ActiveScan

Save the results from ActiveScan.

the O23, yes, definitely suspicious. The O2 (browser helper object) and O3 (toolbar) are from Norton. However the files are missing, so yes we can get rid of them.

First, I need you to set your system to SHOW HIDDEN FILES

Then go here:

http://virusscan.jotti.org/

Click the browse button and locate this file:

C:\WINNT\WinRep.exe

Then submit it and let me know what it says. If the file is actually gone, then no worries, we'll just delete that service.

I searched for WinRep.exe, but it is not to be found.

For grins, I ran a LiveUpdate and a full scan with Norton AV2004. All it found was:

I will tell you exactly what you need to do

Run HiJackThis. Place a check next to the following items and click FIX CHECKED:

O2 - BHO: NAV Helper - {BDF3E430-B101-42AD-A544-FADC6B084872} - C:\Program Files\Norton AntiVirus\NavShExt.dll (file missing)
O3 - Toolbar: Norton AntiVirus - {42CDD1BF-3FFB-4238-8AD1-7859DF00B1D6} - C:\Program Files\Norton AntiVirus\NavShExt.dll (file missing)

Close HiJackThis.

Go to Start->Run and type "Services.msc" (without quotes) then hit Ok
Scroll down and find the below service:

WinRep

When you find it, double-click on it. In the next window that opens, click the Stop button (it may already be stopped which is fine just continue with the rest), then click on properties and under the General Tab, change the Startup Type to Disabled. Now hit Apply and then Ok.

Run HiJackThis. Click on "None of the above, just start the program". Now, click on the "Config" button (bottom right), then click on "Misc Tools", then click on "Delete an NT Service" a window will pop up. Enter the below item into that field (copy and paste):

WinRep

Click ok.

It should pull up information about the service, when it asks if you want to reboot now click YES.

After reboot, post a new HiJackthis log and we will take care of the Minibug at that time.

* Select "Delete on Reboot".

* Copy the file path below to the clipboard by highlighting it then right-click and choose "copy".

* Return to Killbox, go to the File menu, and choose "Paste from Clipboard".
