Not sure how any of the options will work if you have never actually had Windows 10 up and running so this is trial and error so try Start up repair and see what happens.

If I go into maintenance utility it gives me the erase the hard disk
I can either delete all data and partitions or
Delete all partitions and overwrite all sectors.
Will I lose everything if I do this?

None of what you have just done was what was suggested, trying a Start up repair was but as said previously I am not sure how any of the options will work if you have never actually had Windows 10 up and running.

were you trying to install Windows 10 from DVD or a USB thumb drive when you encountered the black screen problem.

You have never got around to answering the above, now would be a good time to as you are out of options as far as using the original recovery partition goes.

You cannot start a non bootable OS in Safe Mode and when the OS concerned is Windows 10 when you cannot boot into Windows the only course of action is to restart the computer a couple of times, when Windows cannot fully boot it should at around the third or fourth attempt go to the (RE) recovery environment which is what you have just been getting.

it was a free file but apparently it messed with my system.

From where was it free, as previously said Windows 7/8 and 8.1 can no longer be upgraded to Windows 10 free of charge meaning that purchasing a new Microsoft product key will be required.

it was a free file but apparently it messed with my system.

I don't remember the site I downloaded it from

I suspect that what you have tried to install may be a cracked version of Windows, no one is allowed or willing to give a $100 OS away free of charge.

As per the GTG Terms of Use we will not help anyone that has illegal software on their computer other than to help them remove it;

  • The posting of links or references to warez or any other type of illegal software is strictly forbidden. By doing so you risk having your user account terminated without warning. We will NOT help anyone we suspect of having obtained their software or services illegally.

All the info you need for downloading and installing Windows 8.1 here the product key should register automatically as Microsoft will have previously stored the information on its database, this is also how users were previously able to upgrade to Windows 10 for free, this offer stopped on on July 29th 2016 and any version of Windows 10 that you installed after this date would also be detected by Microsoft and a new product key requested or a warning that your OS was counterfeit be displayed.

You are welcome, be glad to help you get up and running again  :)

Please see the Option One tutorial courtesy of Brink here you will recall that I mentioned that you should not need to enter a product key, this is also explained at the link.

Let us know how you get on or if you have any questions along the way.
