DNS server question

So, my fiancée and I have been playing some Destiny. We have a PS4 each and play on the same wireless network. This game stupidly refuses to allow people on the same network playing together so we found a work-around in manually changing the DNS server on one of the PS4s to Google's public server -

Curious as I am, however, I obviously wonder why this solved our problem!? Anyone care to explain?

Are you sure it was the game that was not allowing you two not able to play online, it is sounds like the ISP DNS servers was the cause of the issue and when you change the ISP DNS servers to Google public DNS servers problem solved.
