Hello! 

 

So I noticed this past Tuesday that I had the Microsoft windows software removal tool running in the background and I didn't think too much of it because from what I understand, this program runs once a month. I noticed because of how much CPU it's using, but I figured it would stop the next day. It is now friday and it's still running, using about 30% of my CPU. It is labeled at MRT.exe, so I do not think it is a virus. But I'm wondering how I can make it stop running so it doesn't use so much CPU. Also sorry for not adding tags, for some reason I couldn't for this topic.

I have attempted to "end process" several times on the task manager but it has no effect.

I did attempt to use process explorer to end the task, but it said that my access was denied which is very strange as I am the administrator for my laptop.. Also, I went to the task scheduler and it did not have anything scheduled in the past week.

Try right clicking on Process Monitor, then select, Run As Admin.

I did run the program as an administrator and it still told me that my access was denied. I am taking a look at the article. It's a bit confusing, but I'm trying to see if I can figure it out.

It is under my C:\Windows\System32

Interestingly enough I just restarted my computer and it's no longer showing up on my task manager. I'm not sure what happened!

Also run a Manual Windows Update, see if one of the updates is MRT.

I did restart my computer and it did not come back! Today my laptop was actually scheduled for an update (I'm not sure for what, exactly it automatically restarted) and the scanner tool did not pop up again.
