PC with 3 harddisks. One with W7, one with W10, one large with data (Z:)

Multiboot system.
I like to replace the HDD with W10 for a new and larger one.

 

What I think I have to do:
Create an image of the W10 disk and put it on the Z: drive.
Remove the W10 disk and put the new HDD in its place, start the pc and put the image on the new HDD.

 

My questions are:
1- From which operating system do I have to create the image, W7 or W10 or doesn't that matter?

2-Will this method work and will I keep the multiboot?

You got the right idea there for sure.  Yes you need to create a full on backup image, I use CloneZilla at work for this and an external hard drive.  Your Z data drive should work just like my external.

 

I always find it better to create an image through a linux type program such as Clonezilla.  That way Windows doesn't interfere with the business at hand.

 

You'll need a cd or flash drive.  Download Clonezilla live CD.  http://clonezilla.org/liveusb.php

 

They have the whole process up there of making a bootable CD or USB drive.  As well as backing up and restoring Images.

 

Boot to clonezilla, Do a full backup of all partitions not just your boot partition and save that as an image to your Z drive.

 

Put in new hard drive, boot to clonezilla, do a full restore of the image you created (all partitions).  Let it do it's magic and voila!
