A few weeks ago, my computer was infected with what seems to be a virus. My mam has run various spyware etc. programs on it but to no avail. She's also tried Norton Anti-Virus but the virus won't allow any page that includes a form(or so she says). I've only been able to look at the computer since last night, but whatever it is goes way beyond my intelligence level. I'll describe the symptoms and hopefully somebody will recognise what has happened.

Hotmail cannot be accessed, through IE anyway. The mailbox page loads half way and then is diverted to this address: http://www.windowws.cc/hp.htm?id=9 (It's a dead link) and from that point on the above link becomes the IE start page (the setting is automatically changed.)

Media Player will not work, when I attempt to play a file it brings up a dialogue box saying, "Windows Media Player Error: The specified module could not be found."

Lastly, I have attempted System Restore and this again will not function. The first time I try to open it the hour glass appears then goes away. The second time, the window appears but is completely white and ends up "not responding." I have restarted numerous times and the problems remain the same.

Does anybody recognise this? If so, I would appreciate any help you can give.

Thank you,

Dave.

You have malware we need to fix, but first you need to apply Windows Critical updates. Without critical updates, you're wide open to re-infection, and we're both just wasting our time.
Click here: http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/
-or-
Order if you're on dial-up, order a free CD here:
http://www.microsoft...default810.mspx

When you're through with that:

Download Ad-aware from: http://www.lavasoft.de/res/aaw6.exe

Install the program and launch it.

First, in the main window, look in the bottom right corner and click on Check for updates now and download the latest reference files.

Next, we need to configure Ad-aware for a full scan.

-> Click on the Gear icon (second from the left) to access the preferences/settings window

1. In the General window make sure the following are selected:
  • Automatically save log-file
  • Automatically quarantine objects prior to removal
  • Safe Mode (always request confirmation)
2. Click on the Scanning button on the left and select :
  • Scan Within Archives
  • Scan Active Processes
  • Scan Registry
  • Deep Scan Registry
  • Scan my IE favorites for banned URL’s
  • Scan my Hosts file
  • Under Click here to select drives + folders, choose:
  • All of your hard drives
-> Click on the Advanced button on the left and select:
  • Include additional process information
  • Include additional file information
  • Include environment information
  • Include additional object details
-> Click the Tweak button and select:
  • Under the Scanning Engine:
    • Unload recognized processes during scanning
    • Include basic Ad-aware settings in logfile
    • Include additional Ad-aware settings in logfile
  • Under the Cleaning Engine:
    • Let Windows remove files in use at next reboot
-> Click on Proceed to save the settings.

-> Click Start and on the next screen choose Activate in-depth Scan at the bottom of the page and then choose:
  • Use Custom Scanning Options
-> Click Next and Ad-aware will scan your hard drive(s) with the options you have selected.

-> Save the log file when it asks and then click Finish

-> When finished, mark everything for removal and get rid of it. (Right-click the window and choose Select All from the drop down menu and click Next).

-> Reboot your computer.

Spybot Search & Destroy Download and install. Start Spybot S&D using the "Spybot-S&D (easy mode)" link from your Start menu . Click the Search for updates button, if any are found then click the Download Updates button. After all updates are downloaded, click the Check for problems button. When the scan is complete, place a check next to anything marked in red, then click the Fix selected problems button. You may need to run Spybot S&D multiple times to remove all infections.

When finished, Reboot your computer.

Please delete your temporary files. Double Click My Computer (WinXP: Navigate to Start --->My Computer)
You will see an icon representing your harddrive (most likely C: Drive) Right Click on the hard drive icon and click Properties at the
bottom of the fly out window. One the very first tab (General) you will see a button labeled "Disk Cleanup"...click that button.
Make sure the following are checked:
Downloaded Program Files
Temporary Internet Files and
Recycle Bin

Click OK and Disk Cleanup will delete those files for you.

Finally, reply to this post with a new HiJackThis log so we can look for any nasties that may have been missed. <_<

OK, I ran both of those programs with the settings you suggested, and alot of stuff was removed. I can't get the Windows Update page to work, it says 'Done' but the screen is just blank. Does it work for you? Maybe it's another effect of whatever this thing is, the main Microsoft page works fine, it's just this one.

Here's the log:

Please go offline, close all browsers and any open Windows, making sure that only HijackThis is open. Scan and when it finishes, put an X in the boxes, only next to these following items, then click fix checked.

Thanks, I did all that but unfortunately nothing has changed.

I couldn't fix this file, as Windows said it was in use: O4 - Global Startup: winlogin.exe

I looked for it in Task Manager but it wasn't there, nor could I find it after startup, despite making sure all hidden files were shown.

Here's the new log:

Download CWShredder install, run and click fix.

Now close all open windows AND browsers and check these items for HJT to fix(a fair amount of these are likely to be gone because of CWShredder):

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Network Security Guard] C:\WINDOWS\System32\sgp3r7g36am.exe

Please reboot into safe mode - How do I boot into "Safe" mode?

Delete these files:
C:\WINDOWS\startsvs.exe
C:\WINDOWS\System32\haffi3xvkre.dll
C:\WINDOWS\System32\sgp3r7g36am.exe

Also search for the file winlogin.exe, and confirm that it has been removed. It should be in the C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu\Programs\Startup folder.

You may need to show hidden files to delete them.How to show all hidden and system files.

The following DIRECTORY CONTENTS (But not the directory) need to be deleted while in safe mode.
* C:\Windows\Temp\
* C:\Documents and Settings\<Your Profile>\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\ <=This will delete all your cached internet
content including cookies. This is recommended and strongly suggested.
* C:\Documents and Settings\<Your Profile>\Local Settings\Temp\
* C:\Documents and Settings\<Any other users Profile>\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\
* C:\Documents and Settings\<Any other users Profile>\Local Settings\Temp\
* Empty your "Recycle Bin".

Reboot your PC.

If you would please, rescan with HijackThis and post a fresh log in this same topic.

The file in bold was the only one there for deletion, so I deleted it. The winlogin.exe was also not present.

Done. <_<
