I have approximately 14,000 songs, 99% are Mp3, that wont play. All are located on an external hard drive. All are in the same folder. I have other songs on the EHD in other folders that do play. I have tried varying types of players from VLC to WMP. Tried playing the files on Android and Apple phones to no avail. I have tried to move the individual files from the folder and tried downloading them to my PC and still nothing seems to help.

I've tried to change the tags associated with the songs and get an error that says something along the lines of 'No data changes as file cannot be opened' or the like.

When I try to play the file, it opens the associated player but nothing happens. VLC gives no error code whatsoever but WMP at least says the file can't be played because it may be corrupt or the path may be in complete or the file type can't be opened by WMP.

If any one knows a fix, I'd be grateful. I have quite a few years worth of work in these songs and would like to not have to start over.

Have you tried

https://sourceforge....rce=recommended

https://sourceforge....jects/mp3diags/

on a few of your files?  Perhaps one fo them can tell you what has happened.

Also let's look at your external drive's health

Get the free version of Speccy:

http://www.filehippo...download_speccy (Look in the upper right for the Download
Latest Version button  - Do NOT press the large Start Download button on the upper left!)
Download, Save and Install it.  Tell it you do not need CCLEANER.    Run Speccy.  When it finishes (the little icon in the bottom left will stop moving),
File, Save as Text File,  (to your desktop) note the name it gives. OK.  Open the file in notepad and delete the line that gives the serial number of your Operating System.
(It will be near the top about 10 lines down.) Save the file.  Attach the file to your next post.  (More Reply Options, Choose File, Open, Attach This File)

and what's running

Get Process Explorer

Save it to your desktop then run it (Vista or Win7 - right click and Run As Administrator).

View, Select Column, check Verified Signer, OK
Options, Verify Image Signatures

Click twice on the CPU column header  to sort things by CPU usage with the big hitters at the top.

Wait a full minute then:

File, Save As, Save.  Note the file name.   Open the file  on your desktop and copy and paste the text to a reply.
