What does windirstat show as the biggest users of the hard drive?

Looks like you have a lot in your documents and settings.

 

Click on the + in front of Documents and Settings.  It should show you your users.  If there are any users you don't need any more you can save some space by deleting them (Control Panel, User Accounts).  Probably your own account is the biggest user, click on the + in front of the biggest % until it gets down to file level.  Note the folder and the files.  Are there some you can live without?

 

Right click on Start and select Explorer.  Go to the same folder and look at the files.  (Normal view is icons which aree worthless for what you want.  Change the view to Details.  Then click on Size.  It will sort them in increasing or decreasing order.  Start at the biggest and delete any you do not need.

just realized you can right click on a file or folder in windirstat and delete without putting it in the Recycle Bin so you don't need Explorer.

Like Application Data 5.2GB.

 

In all uses there is 5.2GB. Only ones on this pc is my wife and I. So would I be able to delete all uses?

 

So sorry about the extra pages, but I copied and edited two to many. I tried to remove them.

Do not remove All Users.  Do remove the folder Application Data.  Click on the + in front of it and you will see more folders.  Try and locate the one using a lot of space.

Getting better: Capacity is 38.2GB   Used Space 32.4GB   Free Space 5.84GB

 

WinDirStat now is: Documents and Settings 48.2% or 14.0 GB

Click on the + in front of Documents and Settings.  Then click on the + in front of each user.  Keep on going until you get to the individual files.  

 

One trick to recover some space is to open Control Panel, Internet Options, then on the General Page, clcik on Settings then change Disk Space to Use to 50 MB.  That will save you 200 megabytes.

 

Another trick is to restrict the amount of space that System Restore can use.

 

There are three methods that you can use to access System Restore functionality.

•

You can access the System Restore Wizard through the Start menu. To access the System Restore Wizard, click Start, point to All Programs, point to Accessories, point to System Tools, and then click System Restore. 

•

You can access System Restore through Control Panel. To open the System Restore Wizard, click Start, click Control Panel, and then click Performance and Maintenance. Under See Also, click System Restore. 

•

You can access System Restore through Help and Support Center. To access the System Restore Wizard, click Start, and then click Help and Support. Click Performance and Maintenance, click Using System Restore to undo changes, and then click Run the System Restore Wizard. 

 

There should be a Configure button.  If you click it you will get a new page with a slider at the bottom that let's you set how much space system restore will use.    I don't know what yours is set to now but you can probably lower it somewhat and save some space.  The minimum is supposed to be 200 MB so I would probably try going down to about 500 (unless it's already lower than that).  On the same page where the Configure button is you can delete all current system restores that will recover some space too.  Probably best to do that before you reduce the amount of space it can use.

With the disk space, it was set on 1024 MB, I reset it to 50 MB.

System restore was set on 4704 MB Max, I reset it to 650 MB-2% ( Min.was 200 MB, Didn't have a setting for 500 MB )

Deleted some in Documents and Settings. Also did a Disk cleanup.

Looked at my disk space and I did regain MB. Now to keep it this way.
