Ok, so recently I upgraded my PC with an SSD and installed Windows 10 on it from my old HDD. Soon afterwards I started getting these motor sounds that would stop if I restarted my PC. I checked for wiring catching on the fans, no luck. The HDDs themselves were OK too.

 

I never found out what the sound was but it stopped when I started getting an error on startup saying my CPU or RAM has changed. I have noticed that when I press F1 to enter setup and Del to go into the BIOS, the memory amount changes from the 8GB to 4GB (I have 2 x 4GB Corsair Vengance RAM sticks). I then restart, go back into the BIOS and it says 8GB again.Soon after that my onboard graphics (both DVI and HDMI ports) stopped working. The monitor definitely works on my GTX 1070. I've had a look in the Device Manager under the Display Adapters and the GTX 1070 is the ONLY adapter available. I've tried reinstalling the drivers but it doesn't do any good.

 

I have done memory diagnostic checks on restart 3 times and viewed the results in the Event Viewer and passed with flying colours.

 

Please help.

The common denominator here is the MB, can you post the brand and model name or number for us.

 

Regarding the motor noise, possibly just a coincidence that it stopped when the error messages began, other than the CPU cooling fan and the audio chip a MB does not generate any noise unless something blows etc.

Easiest troubleshooting steps first.

 

Restore the MBs factory default settings in the BIOS.

 

Reinstall the MBs chipset drivers.

 

Soon after that my onboard graphics (both DVI and HDMI ports) stopped working. The monitor definitely works on my GTX 1070

Does that mean clearing the CMOS?

 

Also after rebooting into the BIOS, I noticed a setting for multi-monitor setup had been disabled. I found an image that shows what it said. There was another option under the "Initiate Graphics Adapter" for "IGD".

Sometimes described as such yes.

 

IGD should be enabled, make sure that it is after clearing the CMOS.

We have success!

 

I managed to google reseting to factory settings through both the pins way and the battery way. There were only 2 pins on the MB so I just took the battery route here (for anyone viewing this thread in the future). The 3rd monitor didn't show up after I installed the chipset drivers again. I even re-installed the VGA drivers just to be sure. Nothing happened.

 

I restarted my PC into the BIOS and enabled the IGD. Saved and returned to Windows. Detection found the monitor! Now I have all 3 back to life.

Does exactly what restoring the factory defaults is supposed to do but on occasion pulling the CMOS battery helps when restoring the settings in the BIOS doesn`t, so fair play for going that route 

 

I restarted my PC into the BIOS and enabled the IGD. Saved and returned to Windows. Detection found the monitor! Now I have all 3 back to life.

 

 

 

IGD being disabled somehow would appear to be the cause of your problems so one to keep in mind should the issue happen again.

 

Best to start a new thread if the motor noise returns rather than complicate this thread.
