I am using Vista but this might just be more of a general question:

1. I notice my computer many times the hard drive is running when I'm not really doing much of anything. When I go to task manager it doesn't list anything running yet these things slow my computer down when I'm trying to do other things. If these are scans, updates, etc I get that they are important, but ultimately it is my computer and I want the things that I am doing to be the priority.

2. This is kind of tied into 1, I have Norton, I'm not online at home currently so don't need it, yet there doesn't seem to be any way to completely turn it off. I can turn certain things off and run the "silent mode" but it only lasts a day. I keep getting all these popup messages about how I'm "not protected" and it still runs scans that use up tons of ram, and it also slows down my startup, can't I just shut if off for now?

3. Final thing, when I go set up folders, by default it always has these useless things for the details like "Tags", "Rating" and stuff like that. I prefer "Size", "Date Modified", and "Type", and I have to change all this whenever I go to a new folder. I have never once used things like "Tags" or "Rating" and this is annoying, is there some way to change this default setting for my folders?

Thanks, sorry for such a long post, but I'm so tired of not even being able to control my own computer.

As far as the slow computer, this could be related to many things. I'm not a malware specialist, so I suggest consulting that forum to see if your problem might be related to that.

As far as Windows related problems, can you run "systeminfo" in a command shell and post the results?

The folder view is a simple fix, this article should show you how.

My system only slows down when these scans and what not start running, it's fine otherwise. For the folders I knew the trick about "applying to all folders" but that only worked on folders within that folder, sounds like I have to edit my registry to make it work.

I will run the "systeminfo" when I get home, I am at work now and have no internet at home so will post it tomorrow. Thanks for the reply
