I have a Dell Inspiron 3847. It has an RJ-45 port but the network hardware will not allow an ethernet cable connection. In fact..the only connections seem to be Bluetooth and wireless.
I have downloaded and installed every driver I can find related to networking on this computer. The operating system doesn't find the network adapter.
Any suggestions?

Bill Pettigrew,
Sorry but got to ask, are you running the ethernet cable from a router or a broadband modem and not direct from the socket.

Router. My router connect to the laptop directly with a cable. I've swapped the cables with no luck. The issue seems to be in the NIC. Device Manager...Network adaptors...only shows: Dell wireless and Netgear. Basically my comp cannot find the LAN connection

So you can connect to the internet using the Wi-Fi device but want to use the LAN, if yes see below;
Download then run Speccy (free) and post the resultant url for us, details here, this will provide us with information about your computer hardware + any software that you have installed that may explain the present issue/s.

Apologies for the delay getting back to you, got sidetracked yesterday
From your Speccy report;

No mention of any LAN port, have you checked in the BIOS to make sure that it has not been disabled somehow.
Have you by any chance tried connecting the LAN when the Netgear USB adapter is not inserted and the Dell wireless device is disabled, if not please try it and get back to us with any outcome.

"No mention of any LAN port, have you checked in the BIOS to make sure that it has not been disabled somehow." I doubled checked the BIOS this morning and the LAN is enabled.
"Have you by any chance tried connecting the LAN when the Netgear USB adapter is not inserted and the Dell wireless device is disabled, if not please try it and get back to us with any outcome." Yes,
I tried that multiple times.
Downloaded Realtek driver this AM and it couldn't find the LAN controller either. I'm starting to think is it damaged. Before I take this thing apart...do you know if it is a card or part of the Mommy Board?
I really appreciate you help walking me thru this!
Bill

Thanks for the update Bill
The ethernet port is integrated into the MB I`m afraid.
Long shot but a suggestion, try removing the Netgear adapter then restoring the MBs default factory settings in the BIOS and see if that does anything.
If the port is bad all is not lost as you can always fit a PCI-E x1 ethernet card like the example here
You are welcome btw

Actually I forgot to do that. I did it this morning and nothing changed.

It was worth trying.
Can I ask if after upgrading to Windows 10, did you download and install the two Windows 10 chipset drivers for your MB, not doing so can cause various issues, not normally with third party add on hardware such as video cards etc but quite often the MBs integrated devices.

The mommy board crashed. System Recovery ended in in failure on 6 restore points. Computer would not boot no matter what I tried including my recovery disk. So I went and bought a new tower. While I was there I also bought a Thermaltake BlacXDuet HD device to recover data on the old HD. An interesting development...the new computer will boot on the old drive and both OS work perfectly!
Anyway, the issue is resolved and I sincerely thank you for your efforts to help me!
