I need some help with verifying and updating the firmware on my intel RAID SAS Expander RES2SV240.... It's a 24 port expander.  I have it connected via 2 sff8087 ports to my LSI 9266 8i (verified tested by intel with the expander) and I have it connected to a 5 drive RAID 6, 4 drive RAID 5, and a 5 SSD RAID 5 array via SFF8087 to SATA3 6g 4xbreak out cables.  

 

The issue is that I'm having 2 drives drop out pretty quite a bit, and I want to ensure it's not firmware issues prior to testing/replacing drives (I read older version of firmware on the expander could drop drives).  

 

If anyone has an info on how to update it and check the firmware, that would be great.

I found a firmware update for the thing:

This is apparently v13.  If you download it and unzip it you will see a folder called Windows.  In the folder called Windows is:

 

CmdTool2.exe

 

The usage instructions for CmdTool2 are:  http://download.inte...etool2_user.pdf

 

but it appears you open an elevated Command Prompt.  Navigate to the folder then type:

CmdTool2  -AdpAllinfo  -a0

and hit Enter and it should tell you all it knows about the thing which I presume includes firmware version.

 

(It's possible that the last part should be -a1)

 

The update instructions are in the same folder  CMDTool2_Windows_v8.04.07_rel-notes.txt

 

Windows instructions for updating RAID Expander Firmware:

    1. Download and extract all files to a local drive.

    2. Boot the target system to Windows.

    3. Run CMD as administrator.

    4. Navigate to directory with windows update script.

    5. Run update script to update all expanders in system.(Using Update.bat for HBA and HWRAID_Update_32.bat/HWRAID_Update_64.bat for RAID HBA)

    6. cycle system power to force reload of expander firmware.

- SMP fix send BREAK if SMP frame lenght exceeds maximum lenght allowed by the SAS 2 specification.

- Zoning fixes

Thanks for the reply, I think the only thing I don't get is navigating to the proper folder.  Am I supposed to navigate to the specific folder via the elevated command prompt?

 

This does sound like my issue though!  Unfortunately, I haven't really tested this setup without the Expander to see if the LSI card is dropping the drives or the expander...

Yes you need to navigate to the proper folder using the command prompt.

 

I don't know where the folder is but navigating using the command prompt is just old DOS commands.

 

To change to a different folder you type:

 

cd  (then the path to the folder)

 

say you want to go to the c:\windows folder then you just type:

cd  \windows

to see what files are in a folder or what subfolders might be there you just do:

dir

or if you think there may be some hidden files then you do:

dir  /a

 

 

To get to your desktop you can type:

cd  \users\yourusername\desktop

or you can use

cd  %USERPROFILE%\desktop

If the file is in your downloads folder then you can do:

cd  %USERPROFILE%\downloads
