Can anyone please check and verify is the newest Samsung SSD 960 EVO NVMe M.2 500GB compatible with the motherboard Asus LGA1150 Z97 MAXIMUS VII HERO?

I tried comparing the specifications but i am not familiar with tech so i don't want to make an expensive mistake.

yes you can use it on that motherboard but you will not get the full speed it's capable of because the m2 slot on that motherboard is a pcie 2.0x2 slot and for full performance it needs to be a pcie 3.0x4 slot. in other words it only uses 2 pcie lanes to transfer data instead of the 4 lanes needed for full performance of the nvme drive.

 

it'll still be faster than any sata ssd drive though.

important thing to note also is this :-

 

The PCIe 2.0 x16 slot (PCIEX4_3) shares bandwith with PCIe 2.0 x1 and M.2 slot. The default setting is Auto Mode, which automatically optimizes the system bandwidth. If you install a PCIe 2.0 x4 device, the system will automatically detect and disable PCIe 2.0 x1 and M.2 slot.

personally i don't think the cost vs the benefits are worth buying that nvme drive on your system especially if you already have a fast ssd drive. when you next upgrade your pc so the motherboard can fully utilize the nvme drives that's when i'd suggest getting one.
