I recently got a new hard drive for my Dell XPS 15 L502X after the original one died.  I installed it and inserted the Reinstallation DVD, but It sends me to a PXE-E61 error and loops back to the Boot Selection.  The CD Drive is at the top of the Boot Priority Order and I even disabled the Integrated NIC.  That stopped the PXE screen, but now it'll just show a black screen for a few seconds then go back to the Boot Selection.

My thoughts on what it could be:

  • The new hard drive is bad.
  • I installed the hard drive wrong somehow.
  • I need something other than the Reinstallation DVD that came with the laptop.

Any advice on what I can do is greatly appreciated as I'm at a loss now.  Thank you for your time and help!

Hi,

If you access the BIOS/UEFI is there any information there related to the HDD been detected?

Usually DELL machines have some diagnostic tools that you can access when the machine start by pressing a function key, see if you can run an HDD check.

I ran Diagnostics from the Boot menu.  One of the first things it said was no hard drive detected.  I've already taken it out once to make sure it was installed correctly.  Did I place it in wrong somehow?

Hi,

The HDD only have one way to fit and connect so if it is firmly connected it should work!

This following video show how to replace the HDD check if you miss something

I took out the hard drive again and reinstalled it.  I'm noticing the screws are forcing it out by a millimeter or two, but I don't know if it's enough to disconnect it..  I ran diagnostics again and all of the tests pass except for the hard drive.  Is there something else I should do but I'm missing?

Laptop Service Tag: 65K2SQ1

HDD: Western Digital Black 500GB (WDC WD50 00LPLX-60ZNTT1)

I connected it to the PC I'm using as a USB and the PC is reading it just fine, just It needs to be initialized.

Hi,

Thanks for the information.

Let Windows initialize the drive on the other computer to see if it makes any difference.

According to the Dell webpage the original HDD have 750GB and you are installing a smaller 500GB HDD. Is this correct?

Some times its necessary to upgrade the BIOS when installing a bigger HDD drive but this doesn't seems the case!

I did as you said and initialized the drive using the PC.  I placed it back into the laptop and tried to boot from the CD drive again, but I'm getting the same result.  The Diagnostics test is still saying it does not detect a hard drive.

To answer your question, yes I did go from a 750GB to 500GB, but it was by mistake.  The 500GB was ordered by accident, but I thought I would just use it as I'm hoping to purchase a new laptop within a year. However, I still have much need of my current one.

You mentioned the BIOS, could that be the issue?  If you recommend upgrading, how would I go about that?

Hi,

The 500GB is a faster drive it works at 7200rpm.

The BIOS updates are on the Dell website but you need to have Windows working on the machine to run the update

http://www.dell.com/...rivers/advanced

the BIOS description doesn't seems to have anything related to the Hard Disk.

Did you try the 750GB HDD using the USB adapter?

Besides testing using a different HDD I think at this point is probably better to take the machine to some repair shop or open the machine to check if the internal connections for the HDD are in place and not damaged.
