Try Firefox's safe mode:

I just tried it with my Firefox and it had no problems playing the video in regular or Firefox Safe Mode.  Does it play the video if you click on the youtube link?

Possibly your Comodo Firewall is getting in the way?  Can you turn it off as a test?

I can see the video embedded on this page! Could it be something to do with that particular forum?

Safe mode and disabling Comodo didn't have any effect.

Firefox is still rsponding very slowly, and I've noticed in task manager the CPU is nearly alwasy maxed out..

Also closing down FF using the red 'X' in the top right corner, doesn't actually close it - if I open task manager, the process is still showing and I have to end it via task manager.

In Task Manager, click on the CPU column Header then you can see what is using the CPU.  Firefox is definitely sick.  Try step 4:

Hi - apologies for apparently disappearing! An unfortunate family issue has taken up my time..

However..all is now well! A reinstall of FF cured that issue, and as to the random shutdowns..a new power supply has cured that too.

So,a HUGE  thanks to RKinner for a clear, helpful and detailed walkthrough in order to solve my issues.. treat yourself to a few beers my friend, you deserve it !
