Hi,

Hope someone can help me.

Yesterday my computer shut down and then wouldn't restart again.  After leaving it for a while and coming back to it it restarted with no problem.  On closer inspection however when I was trying to watch a movie in VLC Player the sound wouldn't work (but it does on youtube/itunes).  I then tried to go to my control panel using the search bar at the bottom left hand corner but it wouldn't let me click on it to type anything (I had tried but mouse and pad on laptop).  I tried to use the admin panel but I get a pop up saying "This file does not have a program associated with it for performing this action. Please install a program or, if one is already installed, create an association in the Default Programs control panel." I tried to take screen shot of this put when trying to save in paint it says it cannot save file.  I eventually got into the control panel using the Run feature but again when I click on any of links like "System", "Power Option" Sound or AutoPlay I get the exact same response as I do for Paint!

I am at a real loss as to what has happened as Internet and most of the other programs that I have used to today have been fine.

Can anyone please help?

Much appreciated.

Hi, thanks for your response.

I tried the below post.

1) It wouldn't allow me to create a new user account when I click on new user nothing happens

2) I still am having the same issue with the pop up appearing saying "This file does not have a program associated with it for performing this action. Please install a program or, if one is already installed, create an association in the Default Programs control panel."

Do you know any other solutions?

Your user account could be corrupted create new user account and see issue resolves in new user account.

Open Command Prompt as a administrator by pressing  win + X, and then press A letter key.
Within Command Prompt type Powershell command and press Enter key.
Execute below command and press Enter key.

Get-AppxPackage AllUsers | Foreach {Add-AppxPackage -DisableDevelopmentMode -Register $($_.InstallLocation)\AppXManifest.xml}
This tells Windows to install those default apps again. Give it some time and allow it to finish, even if nothing appears to happen at first. Even if you see an error message, restart and examine Cortana and Mail app you may just have all those default apps back again, anyway.[/size]

If above command does not resolve Cortana issue then reinstalled Cortana using the following procedure:
  • Open an elevated Command Prompt window (press win + X, and then press A key)

  • Type powershell and press enter

  • Run the below commands one at time.

Get-Process searchui | Stop-Process Force

Get-AppXPackage -Name Microsoft.Windows.Cortana | Foreach {Add-AppxPackage -DisableDevelopmentMode -Register "$($_.InstallLocation)\AppXManifest.xml"}
Restart your computer.

It won't let me enter the "Command Prompt (Admin) its saying This file does not have a program associated with it for performing this action. Please install a program or, if one is already installed, create an association in the Default Programs control panel."

Ok. So I was able to start in safe mode using the above link and was able to access Command Prompt Administration.

I then followed the steps from

  • Please right click the Windows logo (formerly the start button) at the bottom left of your screen.
  • Please select  "Command Prompt (Admin)"
  • Please type the following command and press the <Enter> key: sfc /scannow  (Please note that there is a space between 'sfc" and "/scannow".)

After typing this into command prompt and hitting enter it came up with the following screen. This was instantaneous. (I apologies for the quality but am only able to use camera to take pictures as I can't save anything) https://ibb.co/gJyNvk

I checked for the CBS.log folder but couldn't find it.

Please can you advise further.

Thanks
