I have an HP Pavilion system running Windows XP Home Edition. When I boot up the welcome screen comes up and when I choose an account after about a minute I get the following message:
Windows-Virtual Memory Minimum Too Low
Your system is low on virtual memory. Windows is increasing the size of your virtual memory paging file. During this process, memory requests for some applications may be denied. For more information, see Help.

I click on OK and then I get this message:
Parser Message
Value creation failed " at line 422.

I click on OK and after that it goes nowhere. I can click on turn off and shut the system down. This started a few weeks ago and a friend took the hard drive and connected it as a slave to her system and did 3 different virus scans, all were negative. We did a system restore and we were okay for about 4 days and then the problem returned.

What could be causing this? What can we do to recover?

Thanks for any help you can offer.

Let us take a closer look at what is running on your PC. We'll need you to use a free diagnostic tool (HiJackThis) and post a log back here with the results.

Click the HijackThis Guide in my signature, download it and follow the instructions in the guide.

Most of what it lists will be harmless or even essential, DO NOT delete or modify anything yet! Someone will be along to tell you what steps to take after you post the contents of the scan results.

Something or things running on your system are eating up too much of your physical memory (ram) and windows is trying to use virtual memory to make up for the loss. It could be spyware or just too many apps running at start up. When there is too much memory being used at once windows uses a section of your hard drive (pagefile.sys) as memory. The problem with this is that no matter how fast your hd is it will never compare to the speed of memory. So when windows has to use too much of your pagefile, performance is slowed down because the hard drive is reading memory off of itself and it's normal procedures, and it can only do one thing at a time. You either need to get more memory, not configure so many programs to start when windows does, clear out all spyware (that is using memory too), increase the size of your pagefile (this will rid the error telling you your virtual memory is low, but will not increase the speed much), or all of the above, oh ya defrag your hd too. To increase the pagefile size, go to control panel, click system, click the advanced tab, in the virtual memory section, click the advanced button, i think at the bottom there is an option to "change" the size of your virtual memory. Your pagefile (pf) shold be 1 1\2 - 3 times the amount of your ram. Also if you aren't hurting for hard drive space, when you set the size of the pagefile, "from" and "TO" numbers as the same number, this means windows will always keep that much space open as virtual memory. If the numbers are different, windows keeps the smaller number as the pf size, and when it needs to grow it allocates more space as needed, which slows u up even more.

I expected to have to restore my system in order to run hijack this, since I couldn't get windows to start up at all. So I unplugged my cable modem before doing the restore and surprisingly I was able to start windows without doing a restore.

Here is the log from hijack this:

Thanks for your help. Unfortunately, things didn't work out as we would have liked. I was able to use HijackThis to check the items suggested and then do the fix checked. But then when I attempted to reboot in safe mode, I was unable to get into Windows. I got the same error meesages as before (Virtual Memory Minimum Too Low, Parser error, etc.). I tried doing a system restore which worked to allow us to at least enter Windows before. This time it didn't help. Eventually I gave up and did a destructive restore, since I had everything backed up anyway. So now we are reinstalling our software. Can anyone give me any insight into why this happened and what I can de to prevent it from happening again?

We strongly recommend installing SpywareBlaster (it's free for personal use) Click Here.

Prevent the installation of ActiveX-based spyware, adware, browser hijackers, dialers, and other potentially unwanted pests.
Block spyware/tracking cookies in Internet Explorer and Mozilla/Firefox.
Restrict the actions of potentially dangerous sites in Internet Explorer.
Consumes no system resources.

Download, run, check for updates, download updates, select all, protect against checked. All done. Check for updates every couple of weeks. If you have any errors running the program like a missing file see the link at the bottom of the javacool page.

It's also very important to keep your system up to date to avoid unnecessary security risks. Click Here to make sure that you have the latest patches for Windows.

These next two steps are optional, but will provide the greatest protection.
1. Use ANY browser besides Internet Explorer, almost every exploit is crafted to take advantage of an IE weakness. We usually recommend FireFox Posted Image.
2. Install Sun's Java. It's much more secure than Microsoft's Java Virtual Machine .

RAM is Physical Memory, but if theres an error windows shouldn't tell you that you ran out of virtual memory because once thats full, it will start using the "Pagefile". If that is too small(usually 3x of what ammount of your RAM) it would cause the Virtual Memory errors(at least I think, havn't seen virtual memory error since win 3.1).

Windows requires about 200MB RAM just to boot up.... more if you have programs running, and a theme selected..ect i takes more. If you have less than 512 ram, upgrade. 512 gives windows enough play room in your physical memory that you should't get any errors.
