The settings for viewing files are the settings I am using. I will try the steps you listed and post. 

 

I don't know if this is worth anything, but, this notebook runs Windows 7. I let it update to Windows 10. And it had problems. Windows 10 and this notebook do not play well together. Hard to print, hard to get on-line. I would follow instructions for Windows 10 and they would work for a little while then stop. Got tired of it so I went back to Windows 7. It was after the 30 day uninstall period so I had to reinstall from the hidden partition and reload everything (programs I was running).

 

Wander if something got screwed up in the install/reinstall?

Two questions.

1) Is your last post trying to get me to update to Windows 10? Don't want it.

2) On the last part of your previous post on rebuilding the index, do I follow the instructions in sevenforums to rebuild the index and then run VEW or just run VEW?

On the virustotal scans, in the order you listed, results were 0/60, 0/60, 0/61.

No it's a fix for upgrade problems on windows 7.  Might be an ad for 10 on the page but we want the

System Update Readiness Tool for Windows 7 for x64-based Systems (KB947821) [October 2014]

 

Rebuilf the index first then reboot and run vew.

USB2.0 UVC VGA WebCam which I assume is plugged into a USB port had a problem on the last boot but otherwise it looks pretty good.

 

Where are you seeing Chinese?

Webcam is built-in. Seeing Chinese when I click on the KB updates. They open in Chinese.

They open in English for me.  Is it just the two KP links are do you also get Chinese on the Readiness link?

 

I think it's time to run FRST so I can see what is going on.  I will have to get this post moved to the malware forum since we are not supposed to use FRST outside the forum.

 

• Get FRST from http://www.bleepingc...very-scan-tool/You need to download the appropriate tool for your PC.  If you don't know if you have a 32 or 64 bit system get them both.  Only one will work and that's the right one.
• Right click to run as administrator (XP users click run after receipt of Windows Security Warning - Open File). When the tool opens click Yes to disclaimer.
• Check the Addition.txt box
• Press Scan button.
• It will produce a log called FRST.txt in the same directory the tool is run from.  
• Please copy and paste log back here.
• It will generate another log (Addition.txt - also located in the same directory as FRST.exe/FRST64.exe). Please also paste that along with the FRST.txt into your reply.

Taking a break while I rebuild. Lost my email accounts and website when re-indexed. Trying to get back important emails. Did not realize I needed to backup everything. Did not know re-index would do this kind of damage.

Re-indexing should not make file disappear.  Check disk might if it found a bad sector.

Since they seem to be Chinese versions.

 

Live Mesh allows you to sync files across multiple devices such as a desktop computer, laptop, smartphone devices. The ActiveX control is an extension that used by Live Mesh when you are accessing your files on different devices through Internet Explorer.

According to Microsoft in case if you have two or more computers running Windows 7 or in that case Windows Vista, you can make use of Windows Live Mesh in order to sync program settings in between them. You can sync your favorites inside Internet Explorer, in addition to it if you have Microsoft Office installed, you will be able to sync your styles, templates, custom dictionary, and also in addition to it email signatures.

If you don't need this feature, you can uninstall it without it affecting your computer.

Turned the computer off for a while. When I turned it back on, everything was back. Don't know how so I'm leaving it alone.

My guess is that it was unable to load your profile so created a temp profile.  Temp profiles can not access everything that the real profile can.  Then after the reboot it was able to load your profile so now things are back to normal.  Might be a good time to backup those files you couldn't access.

 

If you run VEW for System it might show the errors and what was tying up the registry.  Windows Live is fond of not letting go of the registry so I try & get people to uninstall it if they don't use it.  MS doesn't support Windows Live these days.  They gave up on it.
