I found the chkdsk, exe file in the windows system folder. right clicking on it, gives me the option to run as administrator. Should I try that?

Find the cmd.exe file and right click on it and Run As Admin.  Then you can type in chkdsk with the options.  If you just run it without options it can't make any changes.

I did what you said. Ran CHkDSK C: /f /r /x. (with spaces between the parameters) It counted up to 10% and got stuck there. It's been running for 11 hours now with no progress. Is there another program which will replace CHKDSK which might be available from Major Geeks?  I see they have some software which is supposed to fix CHKDSK.  (Just saying...)

I know nothing about the MajorGeeks fix for disk check.  The site is OK so I suppose it wouldn't hurt to try it.

Get SeaTools for Windows from Seagate

http://www.seagate.c...loads/seatools/

Download, Save then right click and Run As Admin

After you install it there will be  a shortcut on your desktop.  Right lcick on it and Run As Admin.

It will detect your drives.  Click on the first one which should be the Seagate drive and then on the Basic Test then Long Generic Test.

It takes a long time to complete.  (Could be hours).  Sometimes when it finishes it will tell you it found errors and ask you if you want for it to try to fix them.  Say yes.

You might also try running the disk check on your other drive.  I would think it would not need to reboot to test it.  It may ask you if you want it to dismount the drive.  Say yes.

ran Sea Tools long generic test. The drive passed the test. (took 5 1/2 hours.)

Epson scan still does not work.

Glad chkdsk worked.  Figured it was the file system.
