New Azpen Win10 tablet (full operating 32bit system), usb2 slot allows use of usb2 modem, a Zoom model 3095. I downloaded drivers, installed, seems to work but getting 691, 628 but mostly 691 error codes, will not connect.
I called my ISP, wanted to change my password to something I could remember (they had assigned one previously).

This question is also about trouble I'm having connecting with my 8.1 laptop (do I have to post there also?)
Before changing my password, I could connect to the Internet, modem worked fine, but that was using my 8.1 laptop, and a USRobotics usb2 modem. Phone line works, all that is OK.

Since the password change I have not been able to connect with my laptop, and never have been able to connect with the tablet.
The guy I spoke with is not really familiar with dial up. I wanted to speak with a higher up tech but it seems they don't want to deal with dial up even though they offer the service.

Does changing the password affect the registry? I have uninstalled, reinstalled the modem, doesn't help.
Any help on this is appreciated, thank you. If I can't get this resolved, I will call them back or go to my ISP provider with my laptop and tablet, to get this resolved, but hoping someone here knows something about dial-up.

I don't know if I can help you with this problem or not, but I know how frustrating it is not to get any help when it comes to dial up internet. It seems like all the tech people have moved on to different technologies nowadays.  Do you connect to your dial up manually through a Windows setting or do you use software specifically associated with your internet company? For instance, you didn't say what company you use, but if you used something like Earthlink, does your dial up window say Earthlink on it or is it more of a generic Windows dialer (when you go to connect to your dial up internet)?

Sometimes the dial up access numbers can be changed also and can result in the error if the previously used access number is no longer being used by your provider. Have you checked to see if there is another access number that is local to you that you can try? Sometimes your ISP will change the access numbers without telling you and you'll need to change to a new one, if possible. Also, have you manually typed in your new password in the dial up box before dialing? I would make sure that you try that in case the old password is still in the memory.

Were you ever able to connect to dial up on your tablet? Or did the error just recently start?

Hey, thanks for answering :-)

I use a local service, called Mobiletel (it has been bought by Eatel).
I click on the wifi icon in the toolbar, then click on Mobiletel in the charms window on the right (8.1 laptop), it worked until the password change.
I wonder about their integrity when it comes to that, I've had trouble with them before. Being dial-up, I don't count.

Thing is, when it works, it works fine.
I wonder if changing the password affects the registry, I sure hope not.

As far as my win10 Tablet, I received it a few days ago, I used my hotspot to download the drivers for the modem. I'm hoping I can get this working also.

Any advice you can give is appreciated!

Thanks and regards,

Although I'm not an expert in the registry, I don't think your registry settings are going to be causing the problem if the only change you made is to change your account password. Did you just change your password within the dial up networking window, or did you make another change? I do have experience with using dial up on a Windows 8.1 computer, and the only problems I ever had with connecting was when my ISP changed the access numbers (that's why I made that suggestion to check and see if the access number you currently use is still valid) or when I had to change my password. Sometimes the old password can be stuck in the settings and that's why I suggested manually typing the new password in the dial up box right before dialing.

Since your Windows 8.1 computer did successfully connect up until the password change, I would suggest working on getting that troubleshooted before moving onto the tablet, since I'm gathering you didn't get the dial up working on your tablet at any point yet. If there is a problem with your ISP account, you will want to know that first. Is there a way to log in to your account on your ISP's website? Any account or webmail you can login to? This would indicate to you whether your new password was actually changed correctly by your ISP, depending on whether you can login to your account with that new password.

I know you said you're getting an error message 691 or 628 when trying to connect your tablet, but are you getting any error codes when attempting to connect your Windows 8.1 computer? Have you noticed when you try to dial, does it fail before it dials or when it gets to the authenticating part? Just trying to troubleshoot if it's an error with actually dialing out on your computer, or if it's an error with your account credentials?

I don't know if I'm helping at all with any of this, but I thought I'd offer some suggestions since I do have some experience with using dial up on a Windows 8/8.1 computer. I remember when I was first looking to buy a new Windows 8 computer, the sales people actually told me that there was no way to use dial up with it and I would have to subscribe to a wireless or other type of broadband connection. Of course, as you know, it is possible to use dial up on a Windows 8 computer, and after doing my own research, I was able to successfully set up a dial up connection with the new computer. Of course, I did have to buy a dial up modem to use with it, but you know all about that too. :) I do get what you're saying about your ISP not being able to offer you any help with your dial up, and there are so few people that have used dial up with the modern computers nowadays, it's really difficult to get help with it.

Anyway, if there is a way for you to confirm your ISP did change your password correctly, like if you can login to your account online, it would at least let you know that the username and password are correct before you try any other troubleshooting.

Hey, the password for my mail and logging on to the Internet was different. The password for my email was something I came up with, I can log into that, there is no email to confirm any password change but they never send email about calls to CS.
I wanted the same PW for getting on the internet, that's how it was supposed to be.

The guy did confirm it was changed, I told him it didn't work, asked if it took some time to go through he said 'not really, at most a few minutes but it is changed'. This is ridiculous, makes me want to drop their service.
After they "changed" my password and I could not get in, I tried having the window prompt for me to type in my user name & password, tried having it saved to automatically insert it, it still wouldn't work.

On the 8.1 pc (laptop) I looked at the properties, in the Options window right now I have checked 'Display progress while connecting".
There is a PPP settings button, when I was able to connect, all 3 were checked: Enable LCP extensions; Enable software compression; and Negotiate multi-link for single-link connections.
Since having this trouble and looking on the web, a few sites mention the last one "Negotiate multi-links..." is supposed to be unchecked.? I tried unckecking that, it didn't work.

When I click the security tab at first a window w/yellow !triangle says Cannot load script info. Error 615: the specified port was not found. I click okay, the tab displays OK.
Next in Data encryption I have this picked from a drop down menu: Optional encryption (connect even if no encryption).
Authentication- nothing checked, it says (Use Extensible Authentication Protocol EAP)

Next in Allow these protocols, all were checked when I was able to get on the internet:
Unencrypted password (PAP)
Challenge Handshake Authentication Protocol (CHAP)
Microsoft CHAP Version 2 (MS-CHAP v2)
Had read tint dial up uses PAP, maybe MS Chap v-2, so tried in checking the 2nd & 3rd CHAP, and just the 2nd unchecked, still not working.

So in unchecking some of these gave different errors. I have it set like it was except for the password change.

The process never stopped in the middle of trying to dial up, it always went through just won't connect.
I've read about not being able to complete the handshake at the ISP.

Everything else was unchecked:
Automatically use Windows logon name, password (& domain if any)
Show terminal window
Run script

This all comes from the connections tab in IE, Internet Options, I'm sure you know.

If the password can get stuck in settings, it seems that would be a registry problem, or encryption?

I'll probably have to call/go by there Monday with laptop and tablet in hand.

When my username and password was messed up a few years ago it seemed like they messed with my account instead of someone else's account. There was no indication of me being hacked, I just couldn't logon to the web back then.
Maybe I can get someone else from the ISP to check this.

Sorry I couldn't help you with this. It does kind of sound like the problem might be on your ISP's end. Hopefully someone different with your ISP will be able to resolve the problem for you. The only other thing I was going to suggest was to setup a new dial up network from the control panel in Windows, just like you are setting it up for the first time in the Network and Sharing Center, just in case starting over will get the settings back right.

I hope it works out for you.Sometime you have to get just the right person to help you at the ISP company. Logically, it seems that someone has to know about dial up since they are selling you the service, right?
