No not yet, because I didn't know if that would mess up my laptop more or not.

I can if you think it might help figure out what is going on and maybe see if it is working again or not?

Hello,

It looks like some program messed up the settings. Some Anti Virus programs like Norton can do this. I don't see any programs on your computer though that might cause this. It's possible the program was removed and the settings it created remained.

I would click remove settings, this is supposed to remove the settings created by whatever program messed it up.

After you click "Remove settings" reboot the computer.

Then try defrag again.

If that does not work try running defrag this way:
  • Click start
  • Click Computer
  • Right click on Local Disc (C Drive)
  • Choose Properties in the properties window
  • click on Tools
    Then click Defrag now.

Alright I will give that a try.

Thank you for letting me know how to get to it if it doesn't run after just clicking on it and running it normally.

Will let you know what happens after I give it a try.

It isn't letting me remove the settings. It also isn't letting me go around it the way you told me to and defrag now.

Hello,

Lets try running this, not just for the defrag problem but for other things as well.

Download Windows Repair by Tweaking.com http://www.majorgeek...r_portable.htmland unzip the contents into a newly created folder on your desktop.

Now run Repair_Windows.exe by double clicking on it ( if you are running Vista or Win 7, use right click and select Run As Administrator)
Now select the Start Repairs tab.
The click the Start button.
Create a System Restore point if prompted.
On the next screen, click the Unselect All button to first deselect all repairs.
Now select the following repair options:
  • Reset Registry Permissions
  • Reset File Permissions
  • Register System Files
  • Remove Policies Set By Infections
  • Repair Winsock & DNS Cache
  • Repair Proxy Settings
  • Repair Windows Updates
  • Set Windows Services To Default Startup

Now on the lower right side check the box to Restart/Shutdown System When Finished
Then make sure the Restart System radio button is enabled.
Shutdown any other programs that you are running now before continuing.
    Now click the Start button.
Be patient while the tool repairs the selected items.
It should reboot automatically when finished.

I have found seven out of the eight things you want me to check to repair. I can't find the one for "Repair Winsock & DNS Cache".

Also I'm assuming after I get everything checked that you want me to check in this list, that I need to start at step one with the power thing and have it run through safe mode like it suggests as well?

Unless it is just called something else and I don't realize it or am over looking it.

The choices that are still unchecked are:

Reset Service Permissions

Repair Internet Explorer

Repair MDAC/MS Jet

Hello,

Repair Winsock & DNS Cache".

Sorry don't worry about that one

Yes. Follow those directions. I think it's safe boot not safe mode.

The reason we are doing this is because of that Trojan that was on here. I just want to make sure things are as they should be before we start fixing things like defrag.

Thanks
Joe :)

I'll be on an off through out the evening

This is from Step 2, the Pre-Scan. Do I need to do the repair option for it or just skip it since it says step 2 can be skipped and is optional?

Great it ran check disc.

Don't need to do part 2

Also as we go along:

I have noted:
Microsoft security essentials seems to have an up date issue at least in the error log part of the FRST logs.

When time permits or you get a round to it.
Could you open Microsoft Security Essentials and see if it's up dated, you can do a scan with it too.

We will get back to the disc defrag error too.

Thanks
Joe :)
