I have an old version of  Malwarebytes anti-malware on my W10 PC. (I see it listed under Programs in Control Panel).

 

How do I run it?

 

I also have (and often run) Avast. Is there something incompatible between the two such that I should not run Malwarebytes? Does Malwarebytes still offer its free version?

Hello Batpark,

 

The free version of Malwarebytes is still available and should not conflict with Avast. I have got both on my Windows 10 notebook.

 

Below is a screenshot from my version of Malwarebytes. It should be easy to click 'update' from this screen. What version of Malwarebytes is yours showing you to have?

 

You could always try deleting Malwarebytes using the ' Malwarebytes Clean Uninstall Tool ' and downloading it again from http://www.majorgeeks.com/files/details/malwarebytes_anti_malware.html

EDIT Actually, I was getting confused above. Sorry!

 

I don't have Avast on my notebook (only on my desktop computer). I was told on this Forum that with Windows 10 you do not need another antivirus program apart from Windows Defender. So it is possible that there is a conflict. Why not test it out yourself by disabling Avast for a while and see if Malwarebytes is then okay.

Chris: I was about to report that your instructions worked fine. Before I received your second message I ha removed my old Malwarebyes app and installed a newer version. I then ran a scan (without disabling Avast); discovered several hundreds bad guys that I then quarantined. But, unfortunately, the odd-ball behavior I am having with Chrome and with Firefox (but NOT with IE) persists.

 

I'll look into the symptoms more and, likely, will post another problem request in the W10 forum.

Hello batpark,

You are very welcome. Am pleased to hear that you managed to install Malwarebytes and that it removed lots of bad stuff.

I hope you manage to sort your other problems out. You should perhaps keep in mind the fact that malware can have hidden effects, even after it has been removed. So if problems do continue, it might be a good idea to pay a visit to GTG's Virus and Malware section. They can do thorough checks there and clear any remaining bad stuff from your computer.
