Hello,

 

My G, H, apostrophe and backspace keys suddenly stopped working on my keyboard. I do NOT think this is a physical issue, because it happened suddenly with just these keys, and I have seen upon Google searching that others have had a problem with the exact same keys. Is there a way to fix this without having to reinstall system and lose my Microsoft Office and other installed programs? (I have an HP notebook with Windows 10, by the way).

 

I have tried ejecting battery and unplugging cable and holding down Start button, but it didn't work. The onscreen keyboard works, but it's a pain to have to use. I know I could buy an external keyboard, but I'd prefer to fix this problem if I can.

The first thing that you should do is borrow a keyboard for testing purposes, if that works ok you know that you need to replace your notebooks keypad.

 

Btw, Your on screen keyboard working ok makes me think that the external keyboard will do as well.

Considerin oters ave experienced issues wit te exact same combination of keys, I dont tink its a pysical problem. Tere must be sometin wron wit Windows 10, or wit te driver. Is tere any sort of fix for tis apart from replacin keypad? Tank you.

Tere must be sometin wron wit Windows 10, or wit te driver. 

 

 

If there was the issue would normally be present with whatever keyboard was used, if for instance it was a driver issue the whole keypad would not function.

Yes, it could be an HP specific problem. 

 

My warranty is up, so it mit be expensive for me to replace te keypad. Do you tink resettin PC would elp? (Oterwise I will just ave to buy external keyboard, I suppose; I know tey are ceap). Is it wort it to try resettin PC, and risk losin my Microsoft Office (not sure I can reinstall aain, or if max number of installations as been reaced)?

 

Could it be problem wit ribbon? If so, could I simply clean it and make sure it is properly attaced (take apart computer myself)? I ave dismantled it and replaced a part before.

It is an HP defect (and my laptop did overheat). I will try removin keyboard and cleanin and resecurin connector.

 

If it is a pysical issue, system reset will not elp at all.

If it were the ribbon again the issue would affect the whole keypad and nothing would work.

 

Testing the computer with a USB keyboard really should be done first, it is the easiest thing to try/test, you mention having dismantled the computer before, not sure if it was a full dismantle but you may already be aware of the risk involved, do one thing wrong and the whole computer is hosed, in a nut shell, do not dismantle the notebook until it is certain that is what is required.

Testin w/keyboard is just a little difficult for me now as I am on vacation and not in an area were tis is easy to do. Im returnin ome on Tuesday, could maybe stop by a Best Buy and ceck w/keyboard tere (everyone I know as a laptop, not a desktop, so Id ave to do tat). I assume teyd let me try one of teir keyboards to see if it works?

 

I tink it would work, though, since on-screen keyboard works (for example, I used it to type out "though", since oterwise it would be "tou" and unreadable) . Wat would I learn by testin wit a USB keyboard (oter tan tat te problem is wit te keypad)? If te keyboard works (I assume it will), wat would be my next step?

 

Accordin to some on tat tread, it is an issue wit part of te connector meltin due to overheating, and dismantlin te laptop/resecurin te ribbon could fix te issue (several reported an issue wit exact same combo of keys, and tat dismantlin and resecurin elped). Alternately, could I buy tis part and replace it myself?

 

I know dismantlin must be undertaken wit care, would prefer to fix it some oter way if I could.

 

Replacin a keypad is expensive, I imaine. Is tere any way to replace just individual keys?  

 

In any case, I will not try anytin until I test it wit external keyboard first.

So, if some keys are not workin on my keyboard (possibly due to overheatin), ten is it te keyboard itself? A simple, ceap keyboard replacement would fix it? I ope so! I didnt realize it would be so ceap.
