Understanding Cookies/Website Data on IPhone

On the iPhone:
Under advanced Safari settings is the Website Data stored there ....from visited websites and the data size attached an indication of use on that site OR is the website data here from visited sites AND from the cookies/pop-ups attached to these sites (as frequently seen on sites with adult content) and stored automatically reagardless if the site has been visited or not? And what does the data size mean? Ie: 3.2kb vs 0.3kb for example?
