I assume that is what it was.  One day the type in all my programs became very small and hard to read.  In a program such as Thunderbird, I can enlarge a single email in the bottom pane, by using Control and +, but not the list of emails above.  Likewise for all my other programs, though I can enlarge Internet pages this way.

the second simultaneous change was that the bottom of the taskbar no longer displays all the items at left and right ends, but has up down arrows to see more on the left, a long white bar I can type into between the ends.

It has become very difficult to type, such as this post, without the cursor jumping up to other parts in the paragraph, the type suddenly becoming larger, or going out of the window.

And most disturbing, all my Microsoft Works files are no longer openable.  Once I click on the icon that gives a choice of WP, SS or DB, clicking on any produces a window that is locked and won't go away even with task manager.

Was there some kind of automatic update that resulted in all this?

Sounds like a Display setting issue such as the above poster mentioned. I would double check my resolution settings, make sure it is set to one monitor and not extended etc. You also may need to download the latest driver from the mfg website. If you send a screen shot of your Display settings it would be helpful
