Hi all,

So I bought a R9 290x, but it gets to the start up screen but does nothing else. This screen usually comes up before WITH MY OLD CARD BEFORE I HAD TO UPGRADE, with was a 290, but this is a 290x. The card starts up, and the computer starts up, but nothing on my screen ??? Can my motherboard take this card ??? I have had this problems with new cards, so thought I would buy the next up from the 290, a 290x, but just dont get why this card will not get on screen ??? I upgraded my PS to 850watts.

My SPECS.

Can you tell us what you mean by "start up screen" is it the BIOS or the Windows logo etc.

I upgraded my PS to 850watts.

What is the brand and model name or number of the 850W PSU.

NB: Just so that you are aware, your thread was moved here as it is is the appropriate forum for resolving hardware issues while the Applications forum is if you are having trouble installing or running an application or need help finding an application etc.

HP Pavilion Elite HPE-575uk Desktop PC full specifications here

The MB specifications here

I get nothing on the screen at all.

Then you are not getting to a start screen of any sort which means that your R9 290x and the previous 290 may not be the problem.

Have you tried the screen and video cable on another computer or an alternative screen and video cable on this computer, if you are not getting a " No Signal " message on the screen the problem could be screen or video cable related (or even a video adaptor such as DVI-I to VGA if one is being used).

Checked the specs of the computer and its motherboard and unless the MB has been changed at all you should have the option of integrated video, physically remove the add on video card from the computer, connect your screen to either the DVI-I or HDMI port on the MB, power up, test and post back with an update for us.

What is the brand and model name or number of the 850W PSU.

Can you also answer this for us when you next reply.

Hi there and thx for your help. My computer works fine with old graphics card, but I think I have found the problem, been chatting on another forum as well, my computer is to old to take newer cards. BUT, could you help me buy a new motherboard please, could you point my to one if you have time, that's compatible with my computer, and has 4 memory slots.

https://support.hp.c...ument/c02679517 leads me to believe that the Cleveland motherboard has UEFI settings. Doesn't your BIOS have the "Run UEFI Application..." option?

Unfortunately I also found posts like http://www.overclock..._item/id/624... (and other posts that basically provide the same info about the limited slot power and 3.0 compatibility) and http://www.overclock..._item/id/624... https://h30434.www3....ive-Read-Onl...

Basically you have 2 options: you use a compatible GPU or you replace the motherboard with one that supports your new GPU.

It's a somewhat old PC; this is your motherboard? https://support.hp.c...ument/c02668523 If so, then you can find a couple socket 1155 micro-ATX motherboards like https://www.amazon.c...therboard-So... Do you need more than 2 memory slots? What about SATA devices? Upgrading old systems can become expensive.

You probably have a non-K CPU; therefore no motherboard will make it run faster since it can't be overclocked. Replacing a motherboard is relatively easy, but the main challenge will be the front panel connector that came with the HP case; unlike aftermarket cases, it may have a single block connector.

I have 4 memory sticks in my motherboard now, this could you point me to one with 4 please. Not sure what you mean on a single block connector, here I took a photo does this help ??? Posted a photo.

Is there some reason why you cannot tell us your PSU details, both the original and the replacement.

There is nothing at this time that justifies you going out and purchasing a new MB, you will be opening up another can of worms if you do as you will also have to purchase a new Windows product key.

been chatting on another forum as well, my computer is to old to take newer cards.

Please post a link to this other thread as I would like to see what they are basing their guidance on, your MB has a 2nd generation i7 CPU in it and is PCI-E 2.0 so your new card should work in it.

Hi there,

My new PS is a EVEA 850G.

I was going to also ask you if you could point me to a new motherboard, but do you think the card will work without a new motherboard somehow ???

https://www.currys.c...x-criteria.html

It was not on a forum, but privat message, here is the full chat. And thank you for your help, but a bit confused now, as one is saying the card will not work without a new motherboard, but you might be saying it will ???

Hi there,

I now bought a R9 290x, this does not seem to work, but the R9 290 did, but the X was only brought out a month later, dont tell me this card needs UEFI support ???

The R9 390x didn't work because the Cleveland-GL8 motherboard has a legacy BIOS (no UEFI support). Since a GTX 960 doesn't work on that motherboard (https://forums.evga....fter-installing...), it's very doubtful a GTX 1080 would.

Thank you.

Does it have a switch to select a different BIOS or parameters? Reference 290X GPUs apparently didn't support UEFI, but that was quickly fixed. A reference 290X may work; have you ever considered upgrading to a newer PC?

I would contact XFX and ask if UEFI can be disabled. Threads like https://www.techpowe...xfx-r9-290x-... are about UEFI compatibility. Did you test the card in a UEFI system?

Work. Tried to start a ticket at XFX, but it would not let my put a serial in, the dropdown box is not working. Was going to ask them this.

It makes no difference since it also is an H67 motherboard and the recommendations basically are the same as mine. In that thread you mention that you have 4 memory modules; that will make it more difficult to find an aftermarket motherboard.

Possible replacement motherboards (there are several at various prices):
https://www.ebay.co....-1155-SOCKET...
https://www.ebay.co....-DH67BL-Sock...
https://www.ebay.co....P8Q67-M-DO-C...

https://www.ebay.co....-D3H-rev-1-0...

Always check the manufacturer's site to make sure your CPU is supported (all H67 and Q67 support it, but double-check anyhow).

After replacing the motherboard you'll have to update drivers, install audio drivers, etc. Not difficult, but it needs to be done. Hopefully you won't need to acquire a new copy of Windows.

And thank you again for your help. If you have time, could you do me one last favor, could you point me to a motherboard from this UK shop, as its just down the road from me, thus I can go and pick one up. Thank you again.

My new PS is a EVEA 850G.

That is fine but what did you try and run the card with first.

The R9 290x has been around a few years now, was yours out of the box new, or used but 100% guaranteed to be working.

Sorry but all that chat has done by the looks of it is confuse matters, your model of video card has been tested and confirmed as compatible with MBs that well pre date yours, check here some of the boards are as far back as socket 775 well before UEFI came into being so not sure what the guy at your chat is on about  :headscratch: ( I do think a couple of the MBs there are a mistake but you will get my meaning I hope).

How did a GTX 960 and a GTX 1080 get into the conversation!

Hi P,

Yes it was guaranteed working. The other cards came into the conversation, as I bought them to try, and they did not work either, same think nothing on the screen, but with the GTX 960, I GOT A START UP SCREEN TO GO IN THE bios, BUT WHEN i CLICKED ANYTHING,nothing happened. I also tried R9 390, no screen, but the R9 290, worked as the upgrade for years. So have you an idea what I could do to get this card to work ??? Go read your lonk now.

Thank you for your help.

Hello Wayne,

My new PS is a EVEA 850G.

That is fine but what did you try and run the card with first.

Can you tell us what PSU you previously tried running the 290x card with, was the 290 version of the card still working with it and if so will the 290 work with your new 850W EVGA PSU.

The MB being the cause makes no sense tbh, with the exception of the 290 drawing 275W and the 290x 290W the power requirements are the exact same, this a possibility only so please only consider it atm, your present i7 2600 is PCI Express 2.0 interface and supports DDR3-1066 and DDR3-1333, for the 290 version of the card I found the following info here;

System Suggestions
Radeon R9 290 is best suited for resolutions up to and including 2560x1440. We recommend a Very Strong Processor and 8GB of RAM for Optimal Performance.

The i7-3770K was the only socket 1155 (your boards type of socket) processor that I found that has PCI Express 3.0 interface and can run RAM at up to 1600MHz, couple of problems though, the CPU is very expensive, would need to be checked for compatibility with your MB and you would have to upgrade your RAM to two Xs 4GB of 1600MHz sticks, a rather expensive and problematic endeavour for upgrading from a 290 to a 290x being honest with you.

You are welcome btw Wayne  :)

NB: No need to quote every reply, it only makes for more reading and doesn`t help any, use important snippets of replies by all means as it directs folk straight to the info you wish to emphasise

Hi P, back with more later, and will read what you wrote more slowely. My old PS, which ran the R9 290 was a OCZ 650W. Will get back to you with the rest later, in work. I bought the 850 cos it said I needed a minimum to run the GTX card, but as I said above, it ran, like all the other cards, and comp. starts up, or sounds like it starts up, it is starting up, but nothing on the screen at all, on DVI or HDMI.~

Yes the old 290 worked on the old PS, and yes it still works on my new PS850, but the card is faulty, was on my old PS, it started to show on the screen, and the card was red hot when I took it on, and it just a few days ago I tried it in my comp. on new PS850, the comp. stated up, but just went black, took card out red hot in that short time.

Hmm, just thinking aloud, have you any idea, BIOS or ??? Is it the 8GB ???

Then you talk of  i7-3770K ??? not sure why you mention this ???

I used to play two games on my comp. with the 290, I played these both on the highest settings, and everything was perfect, no problems at all, Forza6 and Pcars, I now have Pcars2 and Forza7, thus is why I went for the 290x with 8GB, not the 4gb the 290 had. Why I mentioned the games, is some people say they could not run those games on a system a wee but better than mine on the highest game setting, but I could with ease, I even had I think the top number of cars racing against, which was I think 20, and all was fine, offline and online.

I checked the list of compatible HP motherboards, I could not find the Cleveland-GL8. The motherboard I have: https://support.hp.c...ument/c02668523, the newer IPISB-CH2 (Chicago) is on the list, but if you navigate to http://www.pc-specs....P/HP_IPISB-CH2_(Chicago)/1627/Compatible_GPUs, I cant find the 290x.

My old PS, which ran the R9 290 was a OCZ 650W.

That is 100W below what is recommended and using over a period of time may have damaged the GPU.

Radeon R9 290X system requirements here

Radeon R9 290 system requirements here

Then you talk of  i7-3770K ??? not sure why you mention this ???

If you check the recommendations at Game Debate they suggest that a strong processor is best and ideally an i7-4770K this is a 4th generation CPU and so not compatible with your MB whereas 3rd generations CPUs are hence using the i7 3770k as an example.

I checked the list of compatible HP motherboards, I could not find the Cleveland-GL8.

Was aware that your MB was not on the list, the reason why I post the link to the list was so that you could see for yourself that the Radeon R9 290X has been used with success in MBs older than yours.

Trying to get your card working with what you have or at least find out if it is compatible with your present hardware, atm I cannot see why it will not work, your MB is PCI-E 2.0 and the GPU being 3.0 is backwards compatible so should work, the 290x requires the same wattage, amps and 6 + 8 pin power dongles as the 290 so should work, the 290 still works in the MB albeit not safely so the 290x should work, this leaves only one sensible suggestion atm, take the 290x card to a local tech or tech store and have it tested to prove whether or not it is in 100% working order.
