hp stream low memory

i have an hp stream which has a very small amount of memory to begin with.i only have about 3 gb left.the hard drive is soldered to the mother board so it cant be upgraded.i dont know much about computers.will an external hard drive solve the problem of low memory,to keep my computer from constantly crashing.

Depends on if the problem is low disk memory or low RAM.  Certainly won't hurt to give it more hard drive space.  You can then offload anything that is not the operating system to the external drive which should free up a lot of space.  If the problem is low RAM you may have a program with a memory leak or some malware.  We can take a quick look:

 

Get Process Explorer

Save it to your desktop then run it (Vista or Win7+ - right click and Run As Administrator).  

View, Select Column, check Verified Signer, OK
Options, Verify Image Signatures


Click twice on the CPU column header  to sort things by CPU usage with the big hitters at the top.  

Wait a full minute then:

File, Save As, Save.  Note the file name.   Open the file  on your desktop and copy and paste the text to a reply.
