Hello,

See if this helps for bookmarks

Hold down the “CTRL” and “Shift” keys while pressing “B“, to make the bar reappear.

The bar is there.

That's not the problem.  I don't see my bookmarks anywhere.

On the bar it says "For quick access, place your bookmarks here on the bookmarks bar.  Import bookmarks now."

I clicked on the "import bookmarks now" and followed the steps, and it said "success."  But where are the bookmarks?  There is only the bookmark bar across the top of the page. I can't find any icon or button to look at my bookmarks. Also, the bookmark manager doesn't list any bookmarks that were imported.

See if by chance there are any bookmarks here.

\Chrome\User Data\Default\Bookmarks

full extensions might look like C:\Documents and Settings\<USER NAME>\Local Settings\Application Data\Google\Chrome\User Data\Default\Bookmarks or C:\Users\USER NAME\AppData\Local\Google\Chrome\User Data\Default)

I checked, but I don't have anything like what you showed in post #18.

Update:  OK, I figured it out.  I had to export the bookmarks from Firefox as an HTML file to my desktop, then import them into the Chrome bookmark bar.  They all work.

I find that Chrome is faster on my computer than Firefox, so I will try it out for a few days and if I'm happy with it, I will change to Chrome permanently.

Things are not going well.

Although I can surf somewhat faster with Chrome than Firefox, I am unable to download anything using Chrome.  For example, if I try to download a file, I get a message saying that my anti-virus failed during the download.  I turned off my anti-virus, and tried to download again.  Same result.  Wouldn't download.  I checked my NOD32 anti-virus settings and couldn't see anything that needed to be changed.

In my frustration, I uninstalled Chrome and have gone back to Firefox (which I prefer, but wish it would be fast like it used to be).

Is there anything else that can be done to speed up Firefox?  Perhaps this is not a malware problem and needs to go to another forum?

Thanks for your help so far, zep 516.

Hello,

You know we are fighting a loosing battle here with XP being unsupported and Chrome does not support XP as well so anything could go wrong.

I tried the Firefox help link. Didn't seem to improve anything.

I understand what you are saying about fighting a losing battle, and I don't want to use any more of your time when there are many others having difficulties as well.  Having said that, is there any last check that can be made to see if there is something that is causing the slow browsing and slow opening of web pages?

Hello,

Did we run a malwarebytes scan just to double check things ? I don't think we did. Can you run one scan.

You can skip the download part, looks like you have it already installed.
  • Please download Malwarebytes Anti-Malware to your desktop.
  • Double-click mbam-setup-version.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
  • Launch Malwarebytes Anti-Malware
  • Then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, you will be prompted to download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select Scan now. Or select the Threat Scan from the Scan menu.
  • When the scan is complete , make sure that that all Threats are selected, and click Remove Selected.
  • Reboot your computer if prompted.
Posting the Malwarebytes log.
  • After the restart once you are back at your desktop, open MBAM once more.
  • Click on the History tab > Application Logs.
  • Double click on the Scan Log which shows the Date and time of the scan just performed.
  • Click 'Export'.
  • Click 'Text file (*.txt)'
  • In the Save File dialog box which appears, click on Desktop.
  • In the File name: box type a name for your scan log.
  • A message box named 'File Saved' should appear stating "Your file has been successfully exported".
  • Click Ok
  • post that saved log to your next reply.

Hello,

There is no other scan. When the browser becomes that bad you reset it or reinstall it. Let me think about what else we can try I'm running out of ideas.

Thanks
Joe :)

I reset Firefox again.  Browsing is now faster.  Not as fast as I would like, but pages no longer take up to 5 seconds to load.  It's quite acceptable!

The only other thing that I can think of that may be worth trying is using the Windows Repair from Tweaking.com.  Is that worth a try?

Hello,

Go ahead an give it a shot. these are the directions i provide for that:

Download then run the Windows All in One Repair (free) from here, disregard the malware guidance but follow the other steps to the letter and in particular ensuring that you first create a new restore point and do a proper clean boot as described Here

Hi zep516,

Over the last day or so, I have found that web pages are loading quite well.  The long lag that was present before is gone since I last reset Firefox.  I think I'll leave well enough alone and not use the Windows All in One Repair at this time.  I may end up doing more damage than good.

Thanks very much for your help!
