Am considering replacing my hard drive with solid state drive. My internet connection passes through a modem and a router. My PC is hard-wired, the router is for wireless devices in my home. Will my hard-wired PC benefit from solid state drive? Is there a 'switch' where my PC can bypass the router?

Doesn't matter whether or not your computer is connected to the internet at all, Windows loads far quicker from an SSD than it does from a stock HDD so having an SSD is a benefit

Disk access can be sped up with a SSD, but whether you will really notice a difference depends on what you do and the limits in other areas. For example, if you don't have much memory and do things which use a lot of memory, then you might not see much of a difference, although paging to the disk should be faster. If your Internet connection is slow and you do a lot of downloads, you won't see much of a difference.

 

Depending on what type of modem you have, you might be able to get a modem that is also a router, but honestly that is not going to make any difference. You can connect your PC directly to the modem, but then your other devices won't have access to the Internet.
