For example "1822".

I just realized that the 1822 is not the number of unread messages; and that that number doesn't change to 1821 when I delete an old message.

What does that number indicate? Can someone suggest a document that explains what's going on here? Thanks. .... batpark

In Gmail it's the number of unread messages.  Look for some unread messages that you have ignored and see if reading them drops the number.
