I think I have Malware but I am not sure. I have an acre laptop running windows 10. I can connect to the internet (for example I can play a game of chess on ICC which launches from an app rather than a browser.), however I can go to virtually no websites. What is strange is I can go to a few. What seems to happen is if I try and go to say ebay I get a page that comes up that says this site cant be reached and that google.ca unexpectedly closed the connection. At the bottom of page I get a ERR_CONNECTION_CLOSED. In the address bar I get an i inside a circle which if I click on says that my connection to the site is not secure.

What is odd is there a very few websites that work amazon and chessbase for example, but virtually none. Any help would be appreciated. I have tried all the easy stuff unistalling browsers, trying different browsers, turning firewalls off etc.

check your date and time are correct and make sure it syncs to internet time.  If it's off you can't connect to https:// sites.

 

Also make sure you have no proxy:

 

In IE,  Gear icon (Tools), Internet Options, Connections, LAN Settings, then uncheck all boxes and OK. Close IE and restart your browser.

 

If that doesn't help tell me what version of Windows you have.

Hi Thanks for helping.
I did the date and time sync and it said I had synced earlier today. I did another sync and changed the time source from default and it didnt help.

However I think I know what the problem is, but dont know how to fix it. We are conservative christians so all our familys devices have a program called covenant eyes on them. It is a monitoring/filtering software. Call us crazy or old fashioned. (We are lol) Anyways from what I gather this can happen when your computer updates. So I thought I would just uninstall, this however led to what is a new problem. When going through the uninstall it starts and then I get the following messsge:
installscript setup launcher unicode has stopped working

And I cant uninstall. I am running Windows 10. I tried google found a big bunch of people had problem with windows 7 and older. I think I found a windows 10 guy who explained his fix, but I didnt quite follow his instructions.

Sounds like that might be the problem.  We can remove your Covenant program as if it were malware:

• Get FRST from http://www.bleepingc...very-scan-tool/You need to download the appropriate tool for your PC.  If you don't know if you have a 32 or 64 bit system get them both.  Only one will work and that's the right one.
• Right click to run as administrator (XP users click run after receipt of Windows Security Warning - Open File). When the tool opens click Yes to disclaimer.
• Check the Addition.txt box
• Press Scan button.
• It will produce a log called FRST.txt in the same directory the tool is run from.  
• Please copy and paste log back here.
• It will generate another log (Addition.txt - also located in the same directory as FRST.exe/FRST64.exe). Please also paste that along with the FRST.txt into your reply.

 

That will let me see what is happening so I can prepare a fix for you.
