I've been having this problem for about a week now. Whenever I turn on my computer it would be fine until I would open up a program or a file and then my fan would make a horrible grinding noise and turn red. This is the first time that it has done this since I got it from my friend (she had it for about 2 years before I got it 2 months ago).

Can anyone help me or give advice? I cleaned it out with canned air last month and tonight and it is still making the noise and turning red.

Attached is the fan in question.

Thanks!

I don't see an attachment.

Attaching is a multi step process.

First click on More Reply Options
Then scroll down to where you see
Choose File and click on it.  Point it at the file and hit Open.
Now click on Attach this file.

Sounds like the fan is failing and needs to be replaced but

Monitor your temps with Speedfan:

http://www.filehippo...nload_speedfan/

Download, save and Install it (Win 7+ or Vista right click and Run As Admin.) then run it (Win 7+ or Vista right click and Run As Admin.).

It will tell you your temps.  A desktop should be under 50 C.

Get Process Explorer

http://live.sysinter...com/procexp.exe
Save it to your desktop then run it (Vista or Win7+ - right click and Run As Administrator).

View, Select Column, check Verified Signer, OK
Options, Verify Image Signatures

Click twice on the CPU column header  to sort things by CPU usage with the big hitters at the top.

Wait a full minute then:

File, Save As, Save.  Note the file name.   Open the file  on your desktop and copy and paste the text to a reply.

Most likely you will need to replace the fan, but check to make sure that nothing is getting into the fan blades.

Not sure why the attachment didn't attach. I uploaded the image onto imgur:

https://i.imgur.com/DY76LWf.jpg

It seems that the fan is running faster than it has in the past so that's why it is making the noise. Also i found out that the fan has red LED lights so it is supposed to be that color.

I am currently running a virus scan and will post the results when they are done

the fan in the picture i mention above hasn't kicked on yet and doesn't until i open up the case and nudge it to mode and that's when it starts to go into overdrive. Should I be worried about it?

EDIT: virus scan came back clean

Any fan that only starts running when you move it manually is defective and should be replaced.  So yes.

Your Process Explorer log is hard to read since  you didn't click on the CPU column header but it appears that Avast is using too much CPU right now.

AvastUI.exe 2.70 24,360 K 75,968 K 7404 Avast Antivirus AVAST Software

  AvastUI.exe 10.95 94,496 K 146,100 K 8112 Avast Antivirus AVAST Software
Perhaps reinstalling Avast will help.
also

System 8.24 132 K 1,896 K 4
is very high.  Usually it's less than 1%  Perhaps it's because of Avast.

it is prompting me to update it so maybe that's why it is using so much CPU. also sorry about the cluster-fudge. if you want i can do it again properly. i just need to turn on the PC again.

so i do need to replace it? will that fix the overturning problem with it, too? how much will a new fan cost me?

About $8 on Amazon

Generic 120 mm 4.72 x 4.72 Inches Case Fan with 3-Pin Connector, Black (12025-BULK)

Cheaper available on Ebay but they come from China so you will have to wait a few weeks to get them.

That should help with the cooling.  Can't say if it will fix all problems but it's a good start.

Process Explorer looks good now.

Best Buy website doesn't show any in stock at my Best Buy (except for one for $56).   Check Walmart.  They may have one.  There are some 120 MM Case fans on their website with 2 day delivery.  Do you need the 3 or 4 pin connector?

The picture looks like a generic fan.  What make and model number is the PC?

Probably 3 wire 3 pin from the part number of the fan.  Pretty generic fan. Most computer places should have something that would work.   Where are you located?
