Hi, Phillpower2. Well, you won't believe what happened.  On second thought, you probably will.  Shortly after your last response to me, my PC began rebooting itself over and over aga... Go to the full post »

Phillpower2, I apologize for the delay.  I haven't been able to continue the troubleshooting at this time.  Remember, I have my mom I have to put first.  If there's a delay in me getting back to you, it's because of this.  If you have to close out the thread, I understand.  I hope you don't.  I really need this resolved, but I have to have the time.  I will do my best to get to this sometime this week.  Thanks again.  :-)

No worries, was just checking back with you.

We don`t normally close tech related threads so not an issue with how long it takes, sad fact is we get so many people that abandon their threads I like to know if and when they have done for future reference.

Thanks.  I had the same issue with my 500GB HHD.  I ran the link and had a category on the cleanup menu called " system queried windows error reporting for error reporting and solution checking" that showed it had 179GB in the files.  I deleted this file and my free space went from 81 to 104 GB and then ran defrag and went up to 112GB of free space (25%).  Much faster now.  Also going to add a second hard drive.

question--I have a dell 560 computer that has a 500GB 7200 rpm HHD.  The western digital 2T come with 5400 rpm.  Can I install the different RPM or do I need to go with the 1T that comes with 7200rpm?

Thanks

phillpower2, again, so sorry for the delay in my response. I ran the minitoolbox you advised. I've copied and pasted the results. I look forward to hearing from you. Thanks again. :-)

Hello Emma,

No worries about the delay, as said previously family comes first.

Only a couple of things on the HDD that you could get rid of but the space that they are taking up is so small that you would only gain a couple of GBs at the most, 7+ years of Windows updates is most likely what is hogging a lot of the space but there is no way that they should be taking up 300GB+, this assumes that you do not have a lot of personal data such as pictures, music and videos etc saved on the C: drive.

Something for you to take a look at and try at the link here

question--I have a dell 560 computer that has a 500GB 7200 rpm HHD.  The western digital 2T come with 5400 rpm.  Can I install the different RPM or do I need to go with the 1T that comes with 7200rpm?

Thanks

Oly,

Easy one to answer but to avoid any possible confusion and people receiving unsolicited emails in their inbox can I ask that you do not post in another members thread looking for help for yourself, thank you for understanding.

A 5400rpm drive will be fine but you may notice the slower access times,if you can,  go for a WD Blue with 64MB of Cache like the example here

Phillpower2, I completed the steps from the link provided. First, the Windows Modules Installer was already stopped. I was surprised to see that, and truthfully kind of disappointed. I was hoping that would be my answer. I renamed the cab files anyway. It gave me about I gigabyte. How will I ever find the culprit!? What now? And thank you for your continued help!

Hello Emma,

Download and run WizTree (free) from here this will tell you what is using up the space on the HDD, let us know the results if you will.

Hi, Phillpower2!

Thank you for this lead. Here are the results. I don't know exactly what this means, but I see a lot of GBs in backup, right? What kind of backup? There was another section to the right that had file extensions on it with amount used, but I couldn't copy that. It says 329 GB under "no extension." Can't wait to hear what you see! :-)

Hi, Phillpower2.

No hurry at all, but just checking to make sure you knew I posted the results above a few days ago.  I'm the queen of lateness, so I'm not complaining.  :-)  Thanks so much.  I know you must be terribly busy!

Hello Emma,

My apologies for being somewhat lax with getting back to you, work and family commitments have kept me busy this week  :(

It is the size of your backups that is using up all of your storage space on the HDD, i would suggest that you delete the oldest of the backups and resize the amount of storage space that is allocated to your future backups, all the info that you need for this can be found here

Hi, Phillpower2.

Well, you won't believe what happened.  On second thought, you probably will.  Shortly after your last response to me, my PC began rebooting itself over and over again.  I couldn't do a thing on it.  I called the Geek Squad at Best Buy, and they took a look.  Long story short, they couldn't figure it out as it was only acting this way at my house.  It wasn't rebooting itself at the store.  So I told them to take care of that, if possible, and delete my backup files, that a very nice guy on a forum had been helping me and it was determined that that was the cause of my storage issues.  A week later, and after wiping it clean and reinstalling Windows, I just got it back, and it's working like a charm.  So happy this is finally over.  Although I didn't get a chance to try to delete the backup files - I'll admit I was terrified to do it - at least you found the problem.  I know this will help others in the future.  Step by step is what it takes, process of elimination.  So I want to thank you so, so much for the time you took away from life (family) to help me.  You are much appreciated!!!  If I could reach you, I'd hug you.  :-)  If I find myself in need again, I'll yell.

All the very best to you...

Emma
