Hi how are you?

Today while I was browsing the net a program called Spysheriff installed itself on my computer and proceeded to take over my desktop with the blue and black screen that everyone has been having problems with. I have used the programs that you guys have recommended ie. cleanup, adaware, spybot, ewido & panda to remove most spyware & viruses on the computer, however when rebooting found this problem to still be present. I have deleted c:/windows/desktop.html to get rid of the background and it seems to have worked however I still cannot change the background. The scroll bar seems to be locked and even when right clicking on a picture and applying it as desktop background it does not change. This is the hijack log.

I would really appreciate your help with this. Thanks alot guys!

Hi,

First, download and install CleanUp! but do not run it yet *NOTE* Cleanup deletes EVERYTHING out of temp/temporary folders and does not make backups.

Download, install, and update Ewido Security Suite
  • Install ewido security suite
  • Launch ewido, there should be a big E icon on your desktop, double-click it.
  • The program will prompt you to update click the OK button
  • The program will now go to the main screen
You will need to update ewido to the latest definition files.
  • On the left hand side of the main screen click update
  • Click on Start
The update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.
After the updates are installed, exit Ewido

Set up PC to show hidden files.(Click link if you do not know how)
Show hidden files

Reboot into Safe Mode. You can do this by restarting your computer and continually tapping the F8 key until a menu appears. Use your up arrow key to highlight Safe Mode, then hit enter.

Once in Safe Mode, Run Cleanup! by double-clicking the icon on your desktop (or from the Start > All Programs menu).

After you're done running Cleanup! follow the instructions below
  • Run Ewido.
  • Click on scanner
  • Make sure the following boxes are checked before scanning:
    • Binder
    • Crypter
    • Archives
  • Click on Start Scan
  • Let the program scan the machine
While the scan is in progress you will be prompted to clean the first infected file it finds. Choose "clean", then put a check next to "Perform action on all infections" in the left corner of the box so you don't have to sit and watch Ewido the whole time. Click OK.

Once the scan has completed, there will be a button located on the bottom of the screen named Save report
  • Click Save report
  • Save the report to your desktop
Reboot into normal mode.

Go to Start > Control Panel > Add or Remove Programs and remove the following:

SpySheriff

Exit Add or Remove Programs.

Delete the following, in bold, if found:

C:\Program Files\SpySheriff <-whole folder
C:\Windows\Desktop.html
C:\winstall.exe

Reboot into SAFE MODE again.

Make sure you are disconnected from the Internet and that all programs and windows are closed. Run HiJackThis. Place a check next to the following items, if found, and click FIX CHECKED:

Still some work to do yet,

Reboot into Safe mode rescan with HJT and check the folowing

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,SearchAssistant = http://minisearch.startnow.com/
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,CustomizeSearch = http://minisearch.startnow.com/
R3 - Default URLSearchHook is missing
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [zzui] C:\PROGRA~1\COMMON~1\zzui\zzuim.exe
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [SP2 Connection Patcher] "C:\Program Files\SP2 Connection Patcher\SP2ConnPatcher.exe" -n=200
O6 - HKCU\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Control Panel present
G(G) O8 - Extra context menu item: Download with NetPumper - C:\Program Files\NetPumper\AddUrl.htm

Ensure no windows open except HJT and click fix checked.

Ensure pc set up to show hidden files and using windows explorer delete the following files if found.

C:\PROGRA~1\COMMON~1\zzui\zzuim.exe
C:\Program Files\SP2 Connection Patcher <<--entire folder
C:\Program Files\NetPumper <<-- entire folder
C:\Documents and Settings\Philip\Desktop\backups\backup-20050619-032151-191.inf
C:\WINDOWS\system32\tsuninst.exe

Now reboot into Normal mode, rescan with HJT and post the log back

Hi, I have rebooted in safe mode and run hjt. when I run it in safe mode none of those items appear only when I run it in normal mode. So basically I could not fix checked them. I have deleted those files you mentioned but cannot find a folder or file by the name of zzui/zzuim.exe.

Should I run hjt in normal mode and then fix those items you have told me about?

Here is the new log anyway;

Thanks,

Woo Hoo We're Dancing ;) :tazz:

From your log, I see nothing in the ways of trojans, nor any evil entities attempting to possess your computer, except for Windows but it's too late for that one. ;)

Congratulations your log now appears to be clean. :tazz:

Here are some tips, to reduce the potential for spyware infection in the future, I strongly recommend installing the following applications:

Detect and Remove Programs:
  • How to use Ad-Aware to remove Spyware <= If you suspect that you have spyware installed on your computer, here are instructions on how to download, install and then use Ad-Aware.
  • How to use Spybot to remove Spyware <= If you suspect that you have spyware installed on your computer, here are instructions on how to download, install and then use Spybot. Similar to Ad-Aware, I strongly recommend both to catch most spyware.
Prevention Programs:
  • Spywareblaster <= SpywareBlaster will prevent spyware from being installed.
  • Spywareguard <= SpywareGuard offers realtime protection from spyware installation attempts.
  • IE/Spyad <= IE/Spyad places over 4000 websites and domains in the IE Restricted list which will severely impair attempts to infect your system. It basically prevents any downloads (Cookies etc) from the sites listed, although you will still be able to connect to the sites.
  • MVPS Hosts file <= The MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one containing well know ad sites etc. Basically, this prevents your coputer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is your local computer
  • Google Toolbar <= Get the free google toolbar to help stop pop up windows.
Other necessary Programs:
  • AntiVirus Program<= An AntiVirus program is a must! Whether it is a free version like AVG or Anti-Vir, or a shareware version like Norton or Kapersky, this is a must have.
  • Firewall<= A firewall is definatley a must have. Two good free versions are Sygate and ZoneLabs.
  • More Secure Browser<= Internet Explorer is not the most secure and best browser. There are safer and better alternatives available. I recommend Firefox, however Opera and SlimBrowsers are good as well.
And also see TonyKlein's good advice
So how did I get infected in the first place? and AntiSpyware Net's spyware article: Spyware, Adware, Malware: What it is, how it got on my computer, how to get rid of it, and how to prevent it.

Hey, just one more thing that has popped up, (aarrghh it never ends!!! :tazz: ) my desktop is in Classic style, ie. the old style boxes and menus. When i go into Display Properties then Appearance to change it, the only style that appears is Windows Classic. How would I get Windows XP style back?

Sorry to bother you again but it doesn't seem to want to run perfectly or even remotely smooth for me!

Thanks again! ;)

Unzip it and using windows explorer, MOVE the luna.msstyles which is present in that folder you unzipped to this folder: C:\WINDOWS\Resources\Themes\Luna
Don't move it to anywhere else than that folder!

When you have moved it there, rightclick on your desktop > properties ... and look if Windows XPstyle is now present again. Choose apply and OK.

If not, reboot first, and try again to select Windows XPstyle

Let me know how you get on
