Hi,

Bought a HP Laptop RPEA6NTP a few months ago as I thought my older laptop was failing.

Some basic specs are 1.6Ghz Processor, 4Gb RAM & running Windows 10 Home edition. Plan was for web surfing & streaming Netflix, etc.....nothing too challenging!

From the get-go it seemed unusually slow to startup. Soon afterwards it will often start running very while I am using the mouse & will then freeze....hard power down is the only option. On other occasions I have also seen it reboot for no reason......

I know I cannot stop the Windows updates from taking over the CPU when they are being installed but somehow I think the problem is beyond this issue.

Hopefully it's just too many unnecessary programs running up, or maybe I bought a 'lemon'!!   :smashcomp:

Any help would be appreciated!

Most all of us highly recommend only using Windows Defender. It is much better then most believe and all that is needed if you follow safe computing practices. Also you can reinstall Malwarebytes once we have fixed your issues if you like. I recommend the paid version for best protection and operation and a good ad blocker such as ublock origin. Once you remove Avast Windows Defender should automatically be turned back on.

Sorry for that......after I sent the message I managed to locate Defender & some info on it.........

I have the Malwarebytes Premium but Avast Free so I appreciate the info on Defender.....I'll consider just to re-install MWB after I completed the actions you recommended.

Back soon............

I basically saved all the text reports to match against the 'Steps' you outlined. Hope all makes sense.........

Did notice that the machine seemed to run better after Avast Free was uninstalled & machine was re-booted....dare I hope?!  :/

Hi Folks,

Thanks for the additional support dmccoy

Was the only thing of note in your Speccy report OZDOUG and the guidance of Darrin was exactly what I would have suggested, the multiple AVs running would also explain the high memory usage that was reported.

You system is running really slow. Please perform the following steps again. Make sure nothing is running at the time. What is the Model of your HP?

Step 1 - doesn't look like dism ran as it was typed incorrectly.
Click on Start menu
Type in cmd
Right click on cmd in list and select run as administrator
Copy and paste the command into the console
2. dism /online /cleanup-image /restorehealth

When these have completed.
Right click on the top bar command window
Left click on Edit then Select All
Right click on the top bar again
Left click on edit then copy
paste into your reply

Step 2 - shows your system is running a little slow and probably has a driver issue.
Need to work on

Step 3
Download and run the Long test on your hard drive
Seagate Seatools for Windows

Step 4
Download the Intel Driver Update tool. Run and update any drivers it finds. Let me know if it finds any and what for.

Morning phillpower2 & dmccoy.

Sorry if I am jumping in too early & just to be sure if I am reading phillpower2's post correctly........is that us finished?

I only ask to be sure if we think it is the antivirus 'conflict' that was causing the problem. While I can understand that, my slight confusion is that the machine wasn't running that well when I first got it & it was a little while before I added Avast & Malwarebytes. The Avast I changed from paid to free some months ago & I didn't fully uninstall one before switching to the other. I have a second laptop (my old unit) & it is running the same Avast Free & MWB Premium as this unit but I have never had this speed issue with it......maybe just a better set up?

Question for dmccoy: Regards the uninstall downloads I used for clearing out Avast (Avast Removal Tool) & MWB (Malwarebytes Removal), were they a better option than using the usual uninstall functions in Windows?

No Phill was just stating that I would continue to help. He is busy with his own issues right now. Please perform the last steps I provided. Yes, the removal tool are much better at removing all files and leftovers of the programs. We recommend for best protection and performance to use Windows Defender, Malwarebytes paid and good adblocker such as ublock origin, etc.
