I have an older pc running windows 10 pro.   Last month it corrupted during the update cycle and I had to revert to last known good config.  Fixed all the idiosyncrasies that this caused except the original issue.  It is consistently corrupting the windows update and I have to run the "fix it now" tool to get it to update.  Trying to avoid doing a fresh load of windows.  suggestions to get me by for a few more months till I  can replace it with something much newer?

Have your tried either resetting Windows 10 or a repair install? Either of these would be a good start.

dmccoy, thanks for trying to help.  However I stated that i did not want to reload the os.  This is an old pc that servers as backup for finance at our non- profit.  Reinstalling all the apps isn't something we have time to do at the moment.

What it appears is that an update is installed, but the updater doesn't know its complete and keeps trying to install it, creating a loop.

Windows update has been repaired.  I have also ran scannow /sfc with no corruption found.  It appears that I have fixed all the major stuff and all is left is this one last item.  It will probably stay that way till July, after we have closed our books for the year.

I understand you don’t want to have to reinstall everything and that is why I recommended the repair install. It doesn’t remove any programs, settings or files from your system. However it is always recommended to have a backup anytime before performing repairs. To be safe you can create a backup image of your computer using something like the following program. That would allow you to perform a quick 15-30 min restore before any changes if needed. However, I have never experienced any issues with the repair installs. If you still prefer to try some possible repairs, we can do that and this option can be used as a last resort method. II still recommend choosing a good the backup method and strategy.

The following are some things to try

Step 1:

Download and run the Windows Update Troubleshooter"

Step 3:

Hi I am brand new (like minutes) on here, and am here for the Windows 10 saga. I have a feeling it may get worse before its not. I have a HP Touchscreen (desktop all in one) came with Win7, and like most saw the upgrade to Win10, and jumped. I was so fascinated that I was unaware I couldn't use the majority of the Awesome stuff on my new system. After an update abt a yr ago, I had No sound. What? I tried it all...very sad. Nothing helped, my computer kept saying that no device was installed-its an all in one-I didn't remove anything. I was lost. It took me over a year to figure out to purchase a headset (gaming...why not right?) so that I could finally hear my music!! However if my headset is not connected - I have no sound at all!! So that's the current status of mine. I am currently using my neighbors PC (doing accounting for him) and he is runnin Win10 on a system waaay older than my HP. (It doesn't even have a webcam) and a week ago my FB gameroom would never launch. same cycle as my computer, the updates failed, etc, etc, etc, So...I did however, just read an article that said if you are having issues with Win10 and you upgraded from Win7 - unless u have a pretty much brand new (all the bells and whistles) PC, that its not compatible with your system. I know, I know, it says to upgrade to Win8/Win8.1 , basically your system has to be able to run 4.0 gig in the background....mine does not qualify. So I cant personally verify that, because this is not my computer I am using at the moment. but tomorrow I will attempt to uninstall Win10 - and do a fresh install of Win7 -  then upgrade to...uh probably nothing. If anyone else has thoughts -  that's what were here for right?? Thank you for letting me ramble, and I apologize and thank you again.  BTW..my initial thought was that Microsoft was aware of the potential proprietary issues with probably the majority of people that would jump at the chance for a free upgrade before the "launch" and now that were hooked, they can do away with the free trial and offer only for a fee and they will make a ton of money. and that is what makes the world go around, right?
