Hello,

I have a feeling I'm going to be on the hunt for a new laptop soon but I'm hoping to avoid it for a while.  3 months ago my OS corrupted, I needed the data from my hard drive so I sent it in to a local shop.  They saved all my data, wiped the machine out and reinstalled Windows 7.  It was fine for a month or so then I started getting the BSOD.  At first it was infrequent, now it's happening on a regular basis.  At least once a day, sometimes back to back within minutes.  I'm fairly confident I don't have a virus but there could be some malware but that shouldn't cause a system failure and subsequent shutdown.  I have allowed it to reboot and do a system C check but it's always short lived.  So before I start looking for a new machine I wanted to check here to see if there is anything I can do.  In the meantime I am saving all important data in case it's time to put the machine to rest.

Any help would be very much appreciated.

Download BlueScreenView
http://www.nirsoft.n...creen_view.html

Double click on BlueScreenView.exe file to run the program.
When scanning is done, go Edit, Select All.

Go File, Save Selected Items, and save the report as BSOD.txt.
Open BSOD.txt in Notepad, copy all content, and paste it into your next reply.

Get Process Explorer

http://live.sysinter...com/procexp.exe
Save it to your desktop then run it (Vista or Win7+ - right click and Run As Administrator).

View, Select Column, check Verified Signer, OK
Options, Verify Image Signatures

Click twice on the CPU column header  to sort things by CPU usage with the big hitters at the top.

Wait a full minute then:

File, Save As, Save.  Note the file name.   Open the file  on your desktop and copy and paste the text to a reply.

Copy the next 2 lines:

TASKLIST /SVC  > \junk.txt
notepad \junk.txt

Open an Elevated Command Prompt:
Win 7: Start, All Programs, Accessories then right click on Command Prompt and Run as Administrator
Win 8: http://www.eightforu...indows-8-a.html
win 10: http://www.howtogeek...-in-windows-10/

Right click and Paste (or Edit then Paste) and the copied lines should appear.
Hit Enter if notepad does not open.  Copy and paste the text from notepad into a reply.

Get the free version of Speccy:

http://www.filehippo...ownload_speccy/

(Look in the upper right for the Download
Latest Version button  - Do NOT press the large Start Download button on the upper left!)
Download, Save and Install it.  Tell it you do not need CCLEANER.    Run Speccy.  When it finishes (the little icon in the bottom left will stop moving),
File, Save as Text File,  (to your desktop) note the name it gives. OK.  Open the file in notepad and delete the line that gives the serial number of your Operating System.
(It will be near the top,  10-20  lines down.) Save the file.  Attach the file to your next post.  Attaching the log is the best option as it is too big for the forum.  Attaching is a multi step process.

First click on More Reply Options
Then scroll down to where you see
Choose File and click on it.  Point it at the file and hit Open.
Now click on Attach this file.

I don't see the Speccy log.

From what I see so far I suspect your RAM is failing.  Test it with option 1

https://www.howtogee...m-for-problems/

If it passes you might do option 2 also to make sure it's good as the MS test is not that good.

The other possibility especially with a laptop is overheating.

You may want to run Speedfan to monitor your temps in real time:

http://www.filehippo...nload_speedfan/

Download, save and Install it (Win 7+ or Vista right click and Run As Admin.) then run it (Win 7+ or Vista right click and Run As Admin.).

It will tell you your temps in real time tho the default is to show the hard drive temp in the systray.  You can change it:  Hit Configure then click on the highest temp and check Show in tray.

A laptop at idle should not be much above 50 degrees C.  Under load like an anti-virus scan it should not go above 65.  If you see it going to high then that means the heatsink is clogged with dust and needs to be cleaned.  Easy job on a Dell - brain surgery on an HP.

Ran the Windows Memory Diagnostic.... says no issues were detected.  I have attached a screenshot of the result.  I'm going to run Option 2 but am a bit unclear on which edition to download.  These are my options:

MemTest86 V7.5 Free Edition Download (also includes V4 for old machines)

Windows Downloads:

Going to install the speedfan thingy now

So with this being a 2 year old refurbished Acer it's somewhere between opening a bag of cookies and baking a souffle....

Mem test options.

First one is for making a bootable CD

Second for making a bootable USB Drive.

If you have a blank CD then choose the first option.  If you have a USB drive that you can use for the test then the second option is your best bet.

Still don't see the Speccy log.

Don't think I've ever cleaned the heatsink on an Acer.   Usually if you google the part number + disassembly you will find someone has posted a you tube video that shows you how to do it.  What you usually need to do is get to the fan and remove it.  Don't unscrew the heatsink or you will have to replace the thermal paste.  Between the fan and the heatsink is usually a solid wall of dust.  (Dell usually provides a cover on the bottom that you can remove with 8 screws and then you can remove the fan.  HP usually requires you to take out the motherboard before you can get to the fan)

The Blue Screen View program points at standard windows files as the source of the problem.  Usually when we see standard windows files as the culprit it's not the files but instead either a memory or a heat issue (or both since two much heat can cause the RAM to act up too).  The hard drive is another possible source of problems.  Speccy will tell me the condition of the hard drive and also give me an idea of the temps.

If you can believe it, I do NOT possess a USB flash drive.  No blank CD's.  But I have 64G SD card.  Will that work for option 2?

I thought I posted the Speccy Log.  I guess not.  Here it is:

I've never heard of anyone booting from an SD card.  Most BIOSes don't offer that as an option in the boot menu so it's unlikely.

Temp is a bit high.  Were you able to get speedfan to work?  What does it show as the highest temp?  When idle?  When doing a scan or watching a video?  It's more accurate than Speccy.  I looked up a few different Acer laptops and they are more like HPs than Dells.  Perhaps the compressed air trick might work .  I would blow it in the exhaust vents with a vacuum cleaner hose on the intake.

Hard drive looks good.  You can uninstall Speccy now.  We don't need it any more.

I got Speedfan installed but don't know what to do with it LOL!

I have the compressed air, I'll try that trick.

Sitting here responding to you it's bouncing from 97 F to 102 F.  Lowest temp 81 F.  Highest 106 F.  Is the fan speed adjustable?

And will any of what we are working on cause Chrome to "Aw snap" reload page, then say "Cant open this page"  Or is that a browser issue separately?

Please give me the temps in C not F which should be the default for speedfan.  Once you install Speedfan there is a shortcut on your desktop.  Right click on it and Run As Admin.  The page it normally starts on has the temps so you can just leave it up and switch back and forth between a movie or a scan and speedfan.

Try running AdwCleaner:

Please download Junkware Removal Tool to your desktop.  Make sure you get the correct Download button.  Sometimes the ads on BleepingComputer will mimic the real Download button which should say: Download Now @Author's site

  • Pause your anti-virus.  Close all browsers.
  • Run the tool by double-clicking it. If you are using Windows Vista, 7, or 8; instead of double-clicking, right-mouse click JRT.exe and select "Run as Administrator".
  • The tool will open and start scanning your system.
  • Please be patient as this can take a while to complete depending on your system's specifications.
  • On completion, a log (JRT.txt) is saved to your desktop and will automatically open.
  • Post the contents of JRT.txt into your next message.

OK.  I switched it back to C... I personally prefer F because I understand it easier, but this is your world and you're in charge :)

Just played a couple games, highest I saw the temp go was 79C  I attached a screenshot of the current reading.  No clue what Core 0 and Core 1 are.  I assume HD is the hard drive

Core 0 & 1 are your CPU.

79 C is way too hot so time to get the dust out.  What model is this?  (look on the label on the bottom)

I see I grabbed the wrong instructions for adwcleaner.  Should be:

Download : ADWCleaner to your desktop.  Make sure you get the correct Download button.  Sometimes the ads on BleepingComputer will mimic the real Download button which should say: Download Now @BleepingComputer

NOTE: If using Internet Explorer and you get an alert that stops the program downloading, click on the warning and allow the download to complete.

Close  all programs, pause your anti-virus and run AdwCleaner (Vista or Win 7 => right click and Run As Administrator).

Click on Scan  and follow the prompts. Let it run unhindered. When done, click on the Clean button, and follow the prompts. Allow the system to reboot. You will then be presented with the report. Copy & Paste this report on your next reply.

The report will be saved in the C:\AdwCleaner folder.
