DNS issues, certain sites not loading

Does CS France mean the server is in France?  What other choices do you have? If you change your DNS manually to 8.8.8.8 does that make a difference in what nslookup says? Go to the full post »

I've been having some issues with certain sites not loading in any browser.

 

At first, I thought it was my VPN, but even with that off and a fresh reboot I still have the trouble. My wife's computer is right next to mine and the pages I have issues with load fine on her, same VPN and obviously same ISP.

 

I flushed the DNS, reset, rebooted, even tried MS Edge, and set my DNS settings to Open DNS. I also tried the Google DNS settings and it still doesn't work. Still can't load certain sites, Amazon affiliate login being just one of them, like the example below. I would appreciate any help with this!

 

The exact error looks like this in Chrome:

 

This site can’t be reached

affiliate-program.amazon.com’s server IP address could not be found.

Please download MiniToolBox, save it to your desktop and run it.

Checkmark the following checkboxes:

  • Flush DNS
  • Report IE Proxy Settings
  • Reset IE Proxy Settings
  • Report FF Proxy Settings
  • Reset FF Proxy Settings
  • List content of Hosts
  • List IP configuration
  • List Winsock Entries
  • List last 10 Event Viewer Errors
  • List Installed Programs
  • List Devices
  • List Users, Partitions and Memory size.
  • List Minidump Files

Click Go and post the result (Result.txt). A copy of Result.txt will be saved in the same directory the tool is run.

Note: When using "Reset FF Proxy Settings" option Firefox should be closed.

There is no proxy enabled so that's not what is happening.  Let's try talking directly to the DNS:

 

Open an Elevated Command Prompt:

If you do it correctly you will get a prompt that says: C:\Windows\system32>

 

Once you have an elevated Command Prompt then type (with an Enter after the line):

 

nslookup affiliate-program.amazon.com

 

On mine I get:

As you can see I am using Google's DNS.

 

I tried switching to your DNS and it just gives me 0.0.0.0

so it may be acting as a proxy and sending it to itself.

 

What does yours give you for an IP address?

Ah, I wondered how much the VPN would play a part in this, even though with it shut off I still encounter the same issue. I use that because I do quite a lot of international travel and am frequently in airports, on trains, cafes, etc.

 

Here's what mine shows:

It does change the outcome. I disabled that DNSCrypt option in the VPN settings and manually changed the DNS to Google's inside the TAP adapter and the wifi adapter. Now the Amazon affiliate page does load successfully and the nslookup shows this:
