I recently tried to update Star Wars The Old Republic and it made my computer run way too hot so I had to turn off my computer and turn it back on. Can anyone help me explain why this happened? Attached are my computer's specs.

Thanks!

First, check to see if all of the internal fans are actually spinning. If one (or more) has failed, replace it (or have ti replaced).

Next, clean any dust from inside the computer with compressed air. Note: Be careful not to over-spin the fans with compressed air. Spinning them faster than they were designed to spin can ruin the fan's bearings. Stick a Popsicle stick or drinking straw through the fan blades to keep it from spinning.

If it still overheats, the next step would be to replace the thermal paste between the top of the CPU and the bottom of the CPU heat sink.

Let us know how it goes ...

I cleaned it all out last night. I replaced two of the three fans quite recently. To be blunt I can't really check the status of my computer right now since I am having trouble with it. I am going to be posting a new thread about it if it doesn't resolve soon (within the next 12 hours soon).

Download, install and run Speccy. Click File > Publish Snapshot > Yes > Copy to Clipboard and then paste in the URL you just copied into a Reply to this thread.

Thanks,

  • Your temps look good, but, Windows had only been running less than ~nine minutes. Try running the game for a while and then publish another Speecy snapshot.

  • In your Speecy report, way down under Voltages it is showing a "9.328V" for your "+12V", which is way out of spec. (Within 5% of 12V). I don't know if it is just a mistake on Speecy's part or what, so we need to verify.

Download the portable version of HWiNFO64 and unzip it into its own folder. Double-click HWiNFO64.exe to start it, check the Sensors-only box and click Run. Down a bit more than halfway you'll see the name of your Motherboard and under that the voltages. Check to see that the "+12V", "+3.3V" and "+5V" are within 5% of being correct. In other words,

the 12V should be between 11.4V and 12.6V

the 3.3V should be between 3.135V and 3.465V and

the 5V should be between 4.75V and 5.25V

okay, i let the update download to 25%. I am absolutely confused. I have speedfan on my computer that monitors my fan's temps. and not once did they go where they did when I posted this thread. Here is the results of my second Speecy snapshot:

EDIT: one final Speecy snapshot for the finalization of the SWTOR update download since I was able to get it done without my computer overheating/letting the game sit idle on the main menu:
