Hello,

 

I installed Windows 10 on a new Hard Drive and then I got a second Hard Drive for all the files and storage.  I wanted to redirect my Documents, Pictures, Video, Favorites, Desktop, Downloads, etc to my new Storage drive (M:).  Somehow, when I tried to do that, IT screwed everything up and now when I go under C:\users my profile is no longer there but If I go to Pictures and click FIND TARGET, I can see my profile in the correct place but its missing the Documents and Desktop folders.

When I go to the M drive and try to move my folders back, I get this message that says:

 

The folder can't be moved here

Failed to build the list of regular subdirectories under "M:\System Volume Information"

Access is denied.

 

I just want everything back at this point.  Can someone help me restore all of this?

 

Any help would be appreciated.

How did you redirect your files? Did they all get moved to m: drive or exactly what happened?

I went to the properties of lets say Desktop and then Location and then clicked Move and selected the M: drive as the location but just M: (root of M:\).  I was able to reverse the Location through the registry but my C:\Users\"profile" is gone.  However if I go to lets say pictures and open FIND TARGET I can get into my profile folder, but as soon as i go back up a level, the folder isn't there.  And if I try to create the folder, it just disappears.

Okay, there is a new way to change file locations in Windows 10 under storage in the settings menu and you do not want to change the user profile in the registry like you use to in Win 7 etc.

When you go into c:\users - do you have any profiles now or a temperary profile.

Do you have any restore points before you made the changes? If not, I think the best way to fix is to create a new user account and move your files back to the appropriate locations. Then if you want to move your user files such as downloads, pictures etc. you can do that as Follows:

Press the Windows key + I for Settings menu
Select System > Storage > change where new content is saved
Change options as needed

When I go into c:\users my profile is not there.

 

I have no restore points since I just installed W10 on to a fresh SSD.

I really didn't want to create a new profile.

 

I'm guessing at this point there is no way to fix the issue I have?

You have to have some type of profile. I don’t understand how you are even logging in if you do not have any profiles. If we can figure out where your old profile is then you can copy the old profile to a new profile as follows:

Copy files to the new user profile
After you create the profile, you can copy the files from the existing profile. You must have at least three user accounts on the computer to complete these steps, including the new account you just created.
1. Log on as a user other than the new user you just created or the user that you want to copy files Open File Explorer
2. Click the View tab, and then click Show hidden files, folders, and drives. 
3. Clear the Hide protected operating system files check box
4. Locate the C:\Users\Old_Username folder, where C is the drive that Windows is installed on, and Old_Username is the name of the profile you want to copy files from.
5. Select all of the files and folders in this folder, except the following files:
• Ntuser.dat
6. Ntuser.dat.log
7. Ntuser.ini
8. Click the Edit menu, and then click Copy.
9. Locate the C:\Users\New_Username folder, where C is the drive that Windows is installed on, and New_Username is the name of the new user profile you created.
10. Click the Edit menu, and then click Paste.
11. Log off, and then log back on as the new user.

I have a user profile.  I just dont know why its not where it says it is.

I'm have 3 pictures to show you.

The first one shows you the path.

The Second shows you me in the user profile folder, with the path on top

The third one shows you what happens when i go up one level and the folder is not there.

 

how can i send them to you?

Just one question by any chance you enabled the Administrator account and then rename it to "Ryno Family"?

Go to command prompt and

type net user

 

Right click on the top bar command window

Left click on Edit then Select All

Right click on the top bar again

Left click on edit then copy

paste into your reply

No, I did enable the Admin account but I did not rename it.

Is it possible the whole profile was moved to M:? Have you looked under m:\users\ and see if it is there?

very strange. Are all your files still showing under C:\Users\Ryno Family?

 

from command please copy and paste the following:

reg query "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\ProfileList" /s > 0 & notepad 0

copy and paste the contents in the notepad file
